There’s no denying that the X3 and X4 are both gorgeous vehicles. They tick all the boxes that make BMWs so stylish – plenty of chrome, big grilles, and aggressive styling.
The X4 is curvier, with a swooping roofline and coupé-style shape, whereas the X3 is boxier and feels more like an estate.
If you like the look of a techy Tesla Model X, the X4 might be your preference. The X3 feels more classic, fitting in among other premium German SUVs.
Both cars get massive alloys and plenty of suave paint options, so there’s no doubt you’re going to get a stunning car either way.
X3 vs. X4: what are they like to drive?

You’re winning here, as well (or losing, if you’re trying to pick between the two). Both the X4 and X3 are comfortable to drive but are feisty when you want them to be.
They get a massive range of petrol, diesel and hybrid engines to pick from, and each one is impressive.
For both cars, we like the 20d. It’s a practical option that can get up to 187hp and impressive fuel economy of up to 49mpg.
They feel similar to drive, but the X4 adds firmer suspension.
X3 vs. X4: interior and technology

The X4 and X3 share a very similar dashboard design. Both are classy and high-quality, with an ambient lighting set-up and BMW’s user-friendly iDrive.
In the latest models, both SUVs get a 10.25-inch touchscreen, or the option to upgrade to a 12.3-inch version.
And, if you’re buying used, you can often find cars with these upgrades for lower prices than brand-new.
It’s comfortable inside as well, with plenty of head and legroom. There are sports seats and automatic climate control, plus loads of visibility.
X3 vs. X4: boot space and practicality

SUVs are typically sought after for their practicality, and we can’t argue with that here. The BMW X3 gets a 550-litre boot, while the X4 isn’t far behind with 525-litres.
The X3 and X4 can drop their seats for more space as well, giving 1,600 litres and 1,430 litres respectively.
Both cars are also impressive for practicality, with the X3 in particular sitting among the best mid-size SUVs for interior space. Even the backseats will suit adults, but the middle passenger might feel the squeeze.
The curving roof of the X4 does mean you lose some headroom in the rear, but it’s not enough that adult passengers will feel too cramped.
X3 vs. X4: safety and reliability
The X4 and X3 are so similar they get to share a Euro NCAP safety rating, with the full five-stars awarded in 2017. That included a 93% rating for adult occupants and 84% for children.
Safety tech in the newer offerings of both cars includes the Driving Assistant Professional. This pulls together features like active cruise control, junction warnings, emergency lane assistant, and an improved steering assistant.
Reliability for both models is highly rated, too. BMW is known for its premium edge and quality build, and the forums praise the X3 and X4 for their solid feel.

We’re envious of anyone weighing up the X3 vs. X4 SUVs – it's a lovely choice to make.
Both SUVs are as luxurious as they are spacious and have plenty to other in terms of tech and features.
The X4 has a slightly bigger footprint but feels smaller inside because of the roofline, so you might prefer the X3 if you value space.
The X3 also tends to be cheaper, but that’ll depend on the options you go for and whether you’re shopping brand-new or used.
