The Renault Zoe is classed as a supermini, or a compact hatchback. And, while it may be short and narrow, it’s quite tall. Apart from model year variations, there’s only one version of the Zoe.

The Renault Zoe was one of the first mainstream electric cars, but as technology developed, so did it. This means you won’t feel like you’re driving something from 2013 if you buy one of the later models.

What features does the Renault Zoe have?

Standard spec varies a lot by model year, but it’s worth scouting out a ZE50 model. This more recent facelift brought the car more in line with modern rivals.

They come with bright LED headlights, automatic lights and wipers, cruise control, air-con and push-button start. Most also have a landscape infotainment display that supports smartphone mirroring, but top-spec cars added an upgraded portrait display.

If you can afford a mid-spec Iconic model, you’ll get electric rear windows and alloy wheels, which make the Zoe feel more complete. There are also more driver aids, like lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition and rear parking sensors.

Is the Renault Zoe reliable?

The Renault Zoe benefits from the inherent reliability of electric cars – fewer moving parts than petrol and diesel cars, so far less to go wrong.

Consumer reports are pretty average, with common complaints involving infotainment gremlins such as patchy smartphone mirroring and a temperamental reversing camera.

How much does the Renault Zoe cost to run?

Electric cars can be very cheap to run, with a full charge costing as little as £3.60 on an off-peak rate (7p/kWh).

Insurance and other parts for the Zoe are also affordable, which makes it an excellent pick for younger drivers or those looking to buy their first electric vehicle.

Who is the Renault Zoe suitable for?

Initially, the Renault Zoe was favoured by those with an eye on sustainability. Now, it’s much more common among town and city dwellers who want something affordable and nippy.

Because of its upright space, rear passenger headroom and boot space is pretty reasonable, but you might find more space in the back of a Peugeot e-208, Vauxhall Corsa-e or GWM Ora Funky Cat.

Other stylish electric cars, like the MINI Electric, Honda e, BYD Dolphin and Fiat 500e are also worth considering.

Yes, Renault confirmed that the Zoe would no longer be sold after early 2024. Since then, the company has brought out a number of new electrified models, mostly hybrids.

Renault covers the battery with its own warranty for eight years/100,000 miles, but that’s not to say it’ll stop working after that.

There are stories of electric cars driving hundreds of thousands of miles before encountering any major issues.

What is the full range of Renault Zoe?

The 52kWh battery in the Zoe ZE50 is good for 239 miles, but expect around 150-200 miles of real-world range, especially in the colder months when an electric car is less efficient.

Is the Renault Zoe good for long distances?

Yes, the Zoe has a similar range to most other small and affordable electric cars.

Rapid charging may be limited to 50kW (many EVs accept 100-150kW), but it uses a CCS connector, which is widely available.

What's replacing a Renault Zoe?

There isn’t a direct replacement to the Zoe, but the new Renault 5 picks up where the Zoe left off. It’s expected to go on sale for somewhere around £25,000, making it one of the cheapest EVs you can buy.
