BMW B58 engine: Specs, performance and features
Learn about what BMW's B58 is and whether your car has one
BMW’s B58 is an icon among engines. Commonly found in the German brand’s performance models, it’s known for being dependable and highly tunable.
After being named one of the best engines in the world in 2023, we thought there was no better time to find out what makes it so special.
Overview of the BMW B58 engine
The BMW B58 is a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine that produces around 300hp (depending on the car and tune) and is commonly found in some of the brand’s best models, from the X3 to the M340i.
It was first used in the 3 Series when it came out in 2015, replacing the N55 engine. It was closely followed by the S58 in 2019 – the sportier version that can produce as much as 1,000hp.
Being made by BMW with its history of building strong engines, it’s a reliable unit that can handle any abuse it may be given.
B58 engine performance capabilities
Power and torque
The total power output of your B58 engine will depend on the car.
Power tends to vary between 286hp and 375hp for the standard B58, whereas the sportier S58 produces up to 503hp in its top-spec configuration.
As for torque, the B58 produces between 400Nm and 520Nm of torque.
Fuel efficiency
While it’s got a strong focus on performance, the B58 also ensures it’s as fuel-efficient as possible with help from its turbocharger.
This works by providing the engine with more air because more oxygen makes an internal combustion engine more efficient.
You can expect to get anywhere from 25mpg to 45mpg with a B58 – but this will vary depending on your driving and type of fuel.
