What is fuel efficiency?

In your car, fuel efficiency refers to how far you can get on a certain amount of fuel. If a car has good fuel efficiency, it’ll be able to travel far without needing to refill often.

Cars with poor fuel efficiency are usually performance models that prioritise power and speed.

Motorists on the market for these types of cars are usually happy to make the sacrifice for power over efficiency, so it’s up to you to decide your priorities.

Fiat models are generally highly regarded for their efficiency, and there are hybrid and electric models on offer that really help save on fuel.

The Fiat 500, 500e, Punto and 500L are great examples of fuel-efficient Fiat models that will help you save money on running costs.

How does Fiat ensure fuel efficiency in its cars?

A major way that Fiat is improving the fuel efficiency of its vehicles is by making the move towards electric power, and offers some impressive hybrid and electric models.

There are a few options for hybrid vehicles, with mild hybrids using regenerative braking to recharge the electric battery, and plug-in hybrids offering even more mile range as they can recharge like a traditional electric car.

You can choose from hybrid options like the Fiat 500X, Panda, 500 or Tipo models.

A fully electric car is a great way to ditch fuel costs completely and offers a cleaner drive. You can even charge your electric car for free at some public charging points.

Manufacturers like Fiat can also choose to use lightweight materials in their cars to help with fuel efficiency. Heavy cars need more fuel to get moving, so ditching extra weight is ideal.

You can also take measures yourself to achieve a more economical drive. Offloading extra luggage or fittings like a roof rack can help reduce your fuel usage.

Driving sensibly and not flying around at top speeds is another way you can improve fuel efficiency.

How do I assess the fuel efficiency of my Fiat?

Fiats, like most modern cars, often come with a trip computer that will track your miles per gallon (MPG) figure, and this will let you know how much fuel you’re using on your travels.

To calculate your MPG, you can follow a few simple steps:

  1. When you fill-up your tank, multiply the number of litres it took to fill it to the top by 0.219 to convert the figure into gallons

  2. Subtract your starting mileage by the final number of miles you’ve covered

  3. Divide the number of miles by the gallons figure – this gives you your MPG figure

Which Fiat models have the best fuel economy?

You’ll always get the best fuel economy from hybrid models, and in the Fiat lineup that means the Fiat 500, Panda and 500X are some of the best options.

The Fiat 500 is an iconic car if you’re after something small, and offers up to 53mpg. Road tax on this one will be cheap as well, cutting back on running costs even further.

The Fiat Panda is another classic model that’s received a hybrid upgrade, offering up to 57.8mpg from the mild hybrid engine.

For something bigger, the Fiat 500L has a claimed 70.6mpg statistic from the Multijet diesel engine, making it another efficient choice.

If you fancy ditching fuel completely, there’s an all-electric Fiat 500 model that can cover up to 199 miles on a single charge. This is a great option if you want to get ahead of the 2035 ban on the sale of brand-new fuel-powered vehicles.
