If you’re not a petrolhead, the idea of handling different types of oils and lubricants for your Audi A3 can seem daunting.

For the most part, a trusted garage can help you maintain the oil in your used Audi, but it’s always handy to have that knowledge in your back pocket.

What oils are available for my Audi A3?

Oil and lubricant maintenance is an important part of keeping your used Audi A3 in the best condition, so it runs just like a luxury car is intended to.

Oils are rated by their viscosity (how thick or thin they are) and this will be displayed on the container, looking something like ‘5W-40’.

The first number in the code refers to the viscosity in cold weather, while the second letter stands for ‘winter’.

The second part of the code is to describe the oil flow at higher temperatures.

You’ll also need to look at the specifications of the oil as there are a range of different standards around the world, plus the manufacturer’s own specifications.

These specifications refer to the performance of engine oils so you can differentiate how they will work in your car.

Newer cars, like the A3, need an oil that will keep the engine clean by using detergent additives, and protect against corrosion and build-up.

Which engine oil should I use?

You’ll be able to find exactly what engine oil your Audi A3 needs in the car’s handbook, so it’s important to check there before making any top-ups to avoid issues.

It’s usually recommended for most A3 cars to use 5W-30 oil, but this may change depending on your exact model and how old it is.

5W-30 is widely used in modern cars and helps to keep your engine healthy and lubricated.

Which brake fluid should I use?

Just like with engine oil, you can find the exact brake fluid you need in the car handbook. Typically, it’s recommended for most A3 models to use DOT 4 brake fluid.

DOT 4 is suitable for many brake systems and driving conditions and is safe for higher temperatures.

Always check your handbook or with the vehicle manufacturer before making a brake fluid change, as using the wrong fluid can damage the system.

How often do I need to make an oil change?

You can usually expect to need an engine oil change every 5,000 to 7,500 miles in a modern car like the Audi A3.

If you notice a low oil level, a warning light on your dash, or smoke from your exhaust – these are signs that you may need an oil change.

If you service your car regularly, this will likely include an oil change.

The amount of engine oil used can vary depending on factors like your driving style and your car’s wear and tear, but Audi says you can expect to use up to 0.5 litres per 1000km (621 miles).

With your brake fluid, you’ll usually need this changing every two years. You can wait three years before changing the fluid in a brand-new .
