Audi A6 Avant estate models

The Audi A6 Avant is a sleek estate car that offers practicality and impressive driving ability, with the added allure of the premium Audi badge.

The A6 Avant is packed with tech and is easy to drive, rivalling the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate and the BMW 5 Series Touring. It’s a great option for driving around town, but it also feels comfortable on the motorway.

As standard, models come with a mild-hybrid engine set-up, but you’ll have to pay extra and move up the range to get add-ons like four-wheel steering (meaning all the wheels move to turn) and cushy air suspension.

An A6 Avant Estate will also get you that reliable Audi reputation, so you know you’re getting a well-built and high-quality car.

Audi A6 Avant models explained

The Audi A6 Avant is a spacious estate car that’s ideal for families or those needing some extra space. The A6 Avant might be for you if:

  • You like the idea of a mild-hybrid engine to save on fuel

  • You appreciate high-tech features, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

  • The choice of engines and trims appeals to you

  • The option to get a used Audi for a lower price makes the A6 Avant more affordable for you

Other options in the Audi A6 range might suit your lifestyle better, specifically if you’re not a fan of the estate styling. Consider whether:

  • You want to stick to a smaller budget and could get along fine without the premium badge. A Skoda Superb Estate could be a better choice

  • You’d prefer something sportier, like the Audi S6 model

  • You don’t care for the extra tech and features, and the price tag that comes with them

Sport

The entry-level Audi A6 Avant Sport model is still enough for most motorists, featuring 18-inch alloy wheels, leather seat trim, electric front seats, and dual-zone climate control. It’s a model that offers comfort and style as its main priority.

S line

The A6 Avant S line gives this estate even more kit, including chunkier 19-inch alloys, and sportier styling with tinted rear windows. It’s one of the best choices in the range for value.

Black Edition

The Audi A6 Avant Black Edition models are based on the S line but feature darker styling. You’ll get larger 20-inch alloys with black exterior detailing, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, and tinted rear windows.

Vorsprung

The A6 Avant Vorsprung model is the flashiest estate in the range, with upgrades such as keyless entry and a panoramic sunroof. The interior is turned up too, with black ash interior trim, and handy adaptive cruise control.

Best Audi A6 Avant engines

The Audi A6 Avant comes with a choice of two diesel engines, both offering that mild-hybrid tech that can help you cut down on fuel.

The 50 TDI model is the best choice if you want something more powerful, offering a 3.0-litre V6 engine with a claimed 48.7mpg from Audi.

The bigger engine is quicker too, with a 0-62mph statistic of 5.7 seconds.

This doesn’t mean the smaller and more affordable 2.0-litre set-up isn’t impressive, though. The 40 TDI offers 204hp and is comfortable and easy to drive.

More recently, a 2.0-litre petrol engine arrived on the scene, offering 286hp and hitting 0-62mph in a claimed statistic of just 5.7 seconds. This 50 TFSI model is just as nippy as the diesel alternative but can’t compete with its fuel economy.

Audi A6 Avant plug-in hybrid

You can now choose an Audi A6 Avant TFSI e – a plug-in electric hybrid model that ramps up the standard mild-hybrid power.

You can get up to 41 miles of purely electric driving in the S Line 50 TFSI e quattro S tronic model, thanks to a 17.9kWh battery. This is an impressive statistic for a large estate car, making it efficient and practical.

The electric credentials are supported by a suitably nippy 2.0-litre petrol engine that you can grab in the mild-hybrid form.

It feels great on the roads and the added efficiency is a bonus.

The best Audi A6 Avant models

The Audi A6 Avant is a practical car that’s versatile enough for many motorists.

Whether you love it for its handsome styling or the amount of space that comes with that premium badge, there’ll be an A6 Avant that suits you.

The best Audi A6 Avant for families

The Audi A6 Avant is a reliable model that’s ideal for family life, but the entry-level Sport trim will be enough for most families. It’s still packed with handy features and tech, but not so much that it will feel too swanky to use on the school run. That mild-hybrid tech is great for busy family life, too.

The best Audi A6 Avant for value

Choose the Audi A6 Avant A line for the best value for money. You’ll enjoy sportier styling that highlights the premium feel of the car, including chunkier alloys and S line badges and branding throughout. It also has all the features you could need.

The best Audi A6 Avant for tech

When it comes to tech, the flashiest model in the Audi A6 Avant range is the top-level Vorsprung trim, offering kit like the MMI Navigation Plus with MMI Touch across two touchscreens, plus extras like a Bang & Olufsen sound system.

You’ll also benefit from a 12.3-inch full-colour digital instrument cluster with the Audi Virtual Cockpit.

The best Audi A6 Avant for space

The Audi A6 Avant is great for space, offering 586 litres of boot space, five seats in a spacious cabin, and great head and legroom. Avoid the TFSI e model if boot space is really important to you, as it shrinks to 360 litres when you add in the extra battery.

Audi A6 models explained: Avant, Saloon, and Allroad

There are a few other options in the Audi A6 range aside from the Avant estate, including a Saloon and the chunkier A6 Allroad.

The Audi A6 Saloon is a classic model that's suave but still practical, making it a great choice for everyday use. You’ll get a 530-litre boot and a choice of petrol and diesel models that all feel impressive on the roads.

The Audi A6 Allroad is another take on estate styling that gets wider wheelarches and what some would call a more menacing look.

The Allroad also gets a lift kit, making the suspension higher so it looks taller and almost like it’s wearing stilts – ideal if you like some road dominance.

Used Audi A6 Avant reliability

Audi cars are known for their quality finish and hard-wearing materials, and the Audi A6 Avant is no exception. Even if you’re buying used, the Avant will still be a reliable car.

The A6 Avant scores well on consumer reliability surveys, placing fairly on tests and getting a good but average rating.

The Audi A6 model received a full five-star rating from Euro NCAP on its 2018 test, making it a safe range to buy from.

Finance deals on used Audi A6 Avant models

You can get a used Audi A6 Avant on Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) or Hire Purchase (HP) car finance if you want to spread the cost with monthly payments.

This will mean you can skip paying the full price upfront and can instead pay for the car, plus interest, across monthly payments.

With PCP, you can also opt to skip the final balloon payment and return the car. This is ideal if you’re not sure you want to own it.

If you do plan to return your PCP car, you’ll need to account for fair wear and tear and excess mileage charges.
