These days, you’ll struggle to find many brand-new cars for less than £20,000, which means looking at used cars may be your only option.
This isn’t a bad thing, though, because at this price point, you’ll be able to set your sights on some pretty desirable models – including those with four rings on the bonnet.
For less than £20,000, you’ll find a range of Audis to suit your needs, including hatchbacks, SUVs and even sporty coupés.
Audi A4 Avant

The A4 makes for a popular family car, with seating for up to five and the luggage space to match.
While the saloon model has a less practical, narrow boot opening, the Avant estate model has a wide-opening hatchback-style boot so it’s great for carrying larger items.
The A4 is powered by a range of efficient engines, including a punchy 1.5-litre petrol and a 2.0-litre diesel capable of more than 50mpg on a long trip.
If you fancy some more performance, the S4 Avant and RS 4 Avant round up the A4 range, each with incrementally more power.
Whether with the rear seats up or down, the A4 Avant’s 495-litre boot (which increases to 1,495 litres with the rear seats down) is on par with most key rivals, including other premium models like the BMW 3 Series Touring.
Audi A5

There are three versions of the Audi A5, including a coupé and a convertible model and a larger ‘Sportback’ version with a pair of rear doors.
The former two are best for drivers who rarely carry passengers in the back, and they also have saloon-style boot openings.
The A5 Sportback not only adds an extra set of doors but also a more useable hatchback boot.
Whichever you pick, you’ll get most of the same engines as you’d find in the A4, but we think some of the more powerful 2.0-litre units are more befitting of a sporty car like this – unless you want a performance S5 or RS 5 model.
While it looks great, it shares many of its parts with the popular A4 models, so finding spares shouldn’t be too difficult and they should be reasonably cheap, too.
Not only can maintenance be cheaper, but also the purchase price when compared with something like a BMW 4 Series and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, which are available in the three same bodystyles.
Audi A6

It’s hard to believe that something that would cost well over £40,000 new could be available for half of this – or less – but that’s exactly what makes the Audi A6 incredibly good value.
Because it’s one of the company’s larger and more premium cars, it’s one of the first to get the latest car tech before it filters down to smaller models like the A4.
With a budget of £20,000, you’ll be able to find plenty of previous-generation models, but we think it’s worth spending a bit extra or keeping an eye out for a great deal on a 2018-onwards model, which is a notable step up in quality.
As with many other Audi models, there are S6 and RS 6 versions, though they’re less common and are generally more readily available in Avant format – that’s the estate version.
Later models are also available with plug-in hybrid setups, which are capable of around 40 miles of electric motoring. They may cost more, but the potential for fuel savings is significant.
Audi Q2

There’s something to be said about the raised driving position of an SUV, whether that’s for better visibility in a car park or a more commanding view of the road.
The Q2 is the smallest Audi SUV, or crossover, and shares many of its parts with the Audi A3 hatchback. It’s also built on the same platform as the Volkswagen T-Roc and Skoda Karoq but feels more premium.
While there are some 4x4 models, the majority are front-wheel-drive, which makes them much more efficient.
The 405-litre boot is slightly larger than average for this size crossover and is more spacious than similarly-sized hatchbacks, which makes it a great option for growing families.
Audi Q3

The Q3 and Q2 are very closely related, but the Q3 looks and feels noticeably larger so it’s good if your family is older and needs more space.
You’ll find the same range of engines but the latest Q3 also benefits from a plug-in hybrid setup. It has a smaller battery than the A6, but it can still do around 30 miles of emission-free motoring.
Like the Q2 above, the Q3 SUV was awarded a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP when it was launched, with strong scores for the protection of its passengers.
Although it’s a reasonably small car and is actually substantially cheaper than the Mercedes GLA, the Q3 feels spacious inside and the upmarket and soft materials make it a pleasant place to be.
Audi TT

Yes, you could even find yourself behind the wheel of a sports car for less than £20k, and there are many TT models to pick from at this price point.
If you’re after a stylish car, there are diesel models that pack a punch but can be cheap to run.
We think the most fun comes from a petrol-powered model – the 2.0-litre engine is the sweet spot and in TTS form produces up to 320hp. It’s the same engine as you’ll find in the Volkswagen Golf R.
The TT RS uses the same 2.5-litre engine as the Audi RS 3. It sounds great and is very quick, but it’s more than most buyers would ever want.
Because Audi has confirmed it will no longer build the TT, which has been available in coupé and convertible formats, buying one of these ensures some rarity, too.
Audi A3

The Audi A3 is the brand's mid-sized hatchback that rivals the likes of the VW Golf and Vauxhall Astra.
If you're after a practical and high-performing hatchback then a used A3 is a great place to start. With a range of trims and engine options, it can fit into everyone's lives.

Mated to either a manual or automatic gearbox, this supermini is great for first-time drivers and more experienced drivers alike – especially when they're well under £20,000.
Whether it's style you're after or just a solid driving experience, you can't go wrong with a three- or five-door used A1.
