If you couldn’t send our sarcasm there, it’s come to be expected that BMW models will look sleek, with just a hint of aggressive styling.
The iX3 does look very similar to its predecessor – you might think it was a BMW X3 on first glance. That’s not a bad thing, as it suits people who prefer their EVs to look a bit more conventional.
There’s the classic kidney grille at the front, the boxy shape, and the chunky wheels that are only slightly different to the X3.
The iX1 could maybe be considered the more attractive of the two if you like a futuristic vibe. Its smaller size feels sleek and elegant, with a sportier feel than the more grown-up iX3.
Plus, frowning headlights give it an meanacing glare that’s fitting for a BMW.

Driving both cars is a treat, and so it should be. You’ve got years of BMW finesse behind the final product.
First up, the iX1 offers the xDrive30 with a hearty 308hp behind it. It’s quiet and comfortable to drive but shouldn’t be underestimated. The all-wheel drivetrain and instant torque from the electric motors gives an incredible launch, with a 0-62mph time of 5.6 seconds.
The BMW iX3 doesn’t get as fiery stats as some of its competitors but still feels feisty. In the M Sport model, you’ll get from 0-62mph in just 6.8 seconds, and the instant electric torque makes it nippy around town.
The iX1 has a range of up to 293 miles on a single charge, while the iX3 gets up to 285. You can expect to knock some miles off from real-world driving.

Like the exterior styling, BMW does interiors very well, and, its electric cars give the interiors even more platform to shine.
Screens take over in both cabins. The uber-modern iX1 gets a frameless BMW Curved Display that stretches across the dash, while the iX3 has a pair of 12.3-inch screens for the infotainment and digital instrument display.
The iX3 also offers a panoramic glass sunroof, sports seats, and Vernasca leather interior as standard across UK models.
There’s plenty of techy touches in the iX1, like wireless phone charging, keyless entry, and a heads-up display.

SUVs typically come with an expectation of a big boot, and the iX1 and iX3 offer 490 and 510 litres respectively – so both do well.
Fold down the rear seats and you get 1,560 litres in the iX3 and 1,465 litres in the slightly smaller iX1.
The rear of the iX1 gets s fully illuminated boot with a folding floor insert and the option to fold the rear seats for a 1,465-litre loading space.
The iX3 can stretch to 1,560 litres if you fold the rear seats, and the lack of loading lip makes it really easy to pack up.
The cabins in both models are comfy and spacious, but the iX3 does have the edge for rear seat space.
iX1 vs iX3: safety and reliability
With BMW’s solid reputation and high-quality in mind, it’s no surprise that these SUVs are considered reliable.
Reviews of both the iX1 and iX3 are positive and there are minimal grumbles in the forums. It’s also worth noting that electric cars don’t need as much maintenance as petrol and diesel cars, so that’s another tick for these two BMWs.
The original X1 and X3 were given a full five-star Euro NCAP safety rating on their last test, but the EV alternatives are yet to be tested. Still, this is a good indication of the safety you can expect.
Safety systems on offer with both models include lane departure warnings and lane change warnings, rear-cross traffic alert, and ISOFIX car seat points – of course.
