If we said either of these didn’t look great, we’d be lying. And if we said they didn’t look similar, we’d also be lying. These are two sleek, sloping SUVs without the jacked-up suspension you might be expecting.

They could be cousins, but they definitely aren’t siblings, with the Ford Mach-E more muscular compared to the smooth lines of the Model Y.

The Mach-E has a stacked up front-end that’s chunkier than the super-simple Model Y, making the Ford feel a bit like a premium German SUV.

You’ll know it’s a Tesla as soon as you see it, as the Model Y has that famed swooping roofline and dolphin-like face.

Between the two, choose the Model Y for its minimalism and the Mach-E for more aggression.

If you’re driving a Mach-E or a Model Y – you're gonna have a good time. Both cars are comfortable, smooth and quiet, and there’s unforgettable power behind both.

Sam Sheehan, our motoring editor, reviewed the Mach-E and said: “It’s plenty fast enough for most drivers, and if you get the GT (480hp), even the die-harders should be happy with the amped-up performance.

The Model Y also does well and can have even more power – between 295hp to 527hp. The Long Range version is a great all-rounder with 384hp and up 331 miles on a single charge.

It’s worth noting that a new Model Y launched at the start of 2025 with up to 432hp and a 373-mile range on offer.

When you’re not outside admiring your car, you’re going to be inside enjoying it – so an impressive interior is needed.

It’s a similar screen setup in both of these cars. The Model Y offers Tesla’s well-known 15-inch landscape touchscreen. The Mach-E slightly one-ups this with a 16-inch portrait screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (which you can’t get in the Tesla).

They both have cabins that are beautiful to look at, but the Model Y feels a bit more modest. Everything is very, very sleek and minimalistic, with no extra buttons or flourishes – other than a bit of trim across the dash.

The Mach-E feels much more ‘car-like’ rather than a spaceship, so it’ll feel a lot more familiar to most And it’s always nice to see that galloping horse on the steering wheel as well.

Ford Mustang Mach-E vs. Tesla Model Y: boot space and practicality

A comparison of the Ford Mustang Mach-E vs. Tesla Model Y space and boot

Despite their sports-car power figures, the Mach-E and Model Y are electric SUVs through and through, so they’re plenty practical.

The 2025 Model Y wins the battle of the boots – with a cavernous 971-litre space (including under-floor storage) and a 117-litre ‘froot’ (front boot under the bonnet).

Side note: Tesla quotes its boot capacity to the roof, rather than the window-line like most other brands, so that number is a bit inflated. It’s still better than most rivals though.

The Mach-E is slightly more reserved but still has enough space for most families, offering a reasonable 512-litre boot and 81-litre froot.

Both cabins are spacious as well, with even backseat passengers having ample room. The Model Y does feel roomier, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be squashed in a Mach-E.
