If you’re looking at the Mercedes GLB vs. GLC, you’ve got a nice problem. These are two premium SUVs that are a joy to own.
Unlike other car name conventions (including Mercedes’ own), the earlier-lettered GLB is the larger and seats seven while the GLC is smaller and has room for a comfortable five.

Mercedes always does well where looks are concerned, and the GL-SUV siblings are no exception. Both the GLB and GLC are handsome and sleek.
The GLB gets a more traditional grille that’s chunky and chrome, while the GLC gets a simple, two bar set-up framing the massive Merc badge. It doesn’t sound like much, but it’s a touch that sets these two SUVs apart.
Aside from that, they’re very obviously related. The GLB, likely taking some inspo from the G-Class, is strong and square, whereas the GLC is curvy with a crossover feel.
We think the GLC is the more aggressive of the pair, but both have a commanding look about them.

Driving a Mercedes SUV is always going to be a nice experience, and you’re not going to be stunted for being in such a hefty car from the three-pointed star.
The GLB offers more seats, but the GLC is the larger car and is built on the chunkier platform. It gets fiercer engines as a result, while the GLB shares engines with its smaller A-Class sibling.
So, the lighter GLB gets smaller engines (a range of 1.3-litre to 2.0-litre petrols and diesels) while the GLC gets a pick of 2.0-litre set-ups.
This evens out the playing field and makes a similar driving experience – both peppy and never sluggish, with great handling.

A premium SUV is always going to bring the best-of-the-best tech, and it’s something to consider when it comes to the GLB vs. GLC.
The GLC is the older option but that doesn’t mean it’s lacking. It still has a huge touchscreen unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and plenty of leather and metal trims for a classy look.
Inside the GLB is no less fancy, getting a massive, stretched touchscreen that spans two-thirds of the dash. It does look slightly more modern (even futuristic) compared to the GLC, so it’ll depend on your preference.

If you’re looking for an SUV you probably want two things – to get in on the SUV trend (comfortable, high driving position, etc.), and to secure a massive boot.
The GLB offers 570 litres of space in the rear, while the GLC brings 620 litres in the petrol and diesel variants. Choose a plug-in hybrid GLC and that space gets squished to 470 litres.
Both cars get plenty of head and legroom. The GLB has got those extra two seats in the third row, but these are better suited to small passengers. Anyone with long legs might feel a bit squished.
The GLC does feel roomier in the back, but you’re obviously not getting as many seats. If you’re a true five-person family and won’t need those extra back seats, the GLC might be more comfortable.
GLB vs GLC: safety and reliability
Both the GLC and GLB scored a full five-star Euro NCAP safety rating on their last test in 2022 and 2019 respectively.
That includes a 92% adult and 88% child occupant rating for the GLB, and a similar 92% and 90% for the GLC.
Both cars have plenty of safety features – as you’d expect from luxury SUVs – including rearview cameras, blind spot monitoring, and adaptive high-beam assist.

Verdict: GLB vs. GLC: which should you buy?
Choosing between the GLB and GLC SUVs is a tough call, but they both have their strengths in different areas.
The GLB is cheaper and can fit more passengers, whereas the GLC is pricier and larger – but you do get a choice of bigger engines.
