Styling: Skoda Kodiaq vs. Peugeot 5008
The Skoda Kodiaq has a traditional SUV design with a boxy shape and straight lines that give it a rugged and robust appearance. It’s also a car that looks its size due to the proportions its designers have used.
The front end is dominated by Skoda’s signature grille, which is recognisable and gives it a lot of brand identity.
Its outdoorsy looks are accentuated by plastic-clad, squared-off wheelarches, but the plastic trim doesn’t make the Kodiaq look cheap.
The Peugeot 5008 is a much sleeker and more modern-looking SUV, and almost looks like a stylish estate on stilts.
Its front is characterised by a wide grille, which, in the case of newer models, is designed to look full-width.
Like all other modern Peugeots, it has LED daytime running lights that look like they’ve been scratched into the bodywork – the brand says they’re meant to look like the result of a big cat’s claw.
Peugeot 5008 or Skoda Kodiaq: which is better to drive?
Both of these SUVs are designed to provide a comfortable ride for the family and an easy driving experience, but each has its own characteristics.
The Skoda Kodiaq has a slightly firmer ride, but it’s still soft enough to iron out speed bumps and other imperfections.
It has a well-weighted steering system that provides good feedback to the driver, which can be helpful at faster speeds, but it’s still easy to turn in tight spaces. In fact, it doesn’t take up much more room than some smaller family cars.
The Peugeot 5008 is known for a comfortable ride and a refined driving experience that you’d typically expect in a more expensive model.
The driver has good outward visibility and the seating position is good, but the steering wheel may take some getting used to.
It sits low and you’re meant to look over it rather than through it, but this can actually be quite engaging and makes the car feel smaller than it is.
Peugeot 5008 or Skoda Kodiaq: interior and technology
Peugeot has fitted the 5008 with a high-tech cabin that features a wraparound cockpit style, which means all the controls are slightly angled toward the driver.
It has a modern, if not futuristic, appearance, especially in some of the higher specs, which have an upgraded 3D-effect digital instrument cluster.
The 5008 strikes a good balance between being spacious and practical as well as slightly sporty, so there are a lot of dark materials in higher-spec models that help shift your attention to the road.
Skoda has gone with a more minimalistic approach. The traditional dashboard has a central touchscreen infotainment system that varies in size depending on the trim, but they’re all easy to use and responsive.
It has just the right amount of physical controls that it’s not cluttered, but you’re not looking for settings on the screen when you’re on the move.
Peugeot 5008 or Skoda Kodiaq: boot space and practicality
The Skoda Kodiaq is an example of an excellently packaged seven-seater SUV, and space in the back is a little bit better than it is in the Peugeot 5008.
Third-row passengers in the Kodiaq have 90.5cm of headroom, measured from the seat base to the ceiling, compared with 82cm in the 5008.
It also has the better of the two boots in seven-seat format. Even with all seats upright, it has a 270-litre space, which is nearly as much as a Ford Fiesta.
The Peugeot 5008 has a 167-litre boot with three rows of seats up, which is about the same as you get in a much smaller Toyota Aygo.
If you don’t need the passenger space and you’re looking at these SUVs for luggage-carrying capacity, then the Peugeot 5008 is better.
It has a massive 952-litre boot in five-seat mode, or 2,042 litres in two-seat mode, compared with 765-2,005 litres for the Kodiaq.
Peugeot 5008 vs. Skoda Kodiaq: reliability and safety
Both of these brands have reputations for building reliable and dependable cars, and they’re also part of much bigger car groups, so both have the backing of other brands.
Skoda belongs to the Volkswagen Group and shares parts with VW, SEAT and Audi, while Peugeot belongs to Stellantis, sharing components with Citroen, DS, Vauxhall and more.
This is very relevant to buyers because it means that finding used parts for both models should be easy.
They both come with industry-standard three-year warranties, but you can always explore extended warranties if you value extra coverage.
Both of these models scored well when they were crash-tested by Euro NCAP, each being granted the full five-star rating.
The 5008 got better scores in child occupant protection and safety assist features, while the Kodiaq won in terms of adult occupant protection and pedestrian protection. The reality, however, is that both cars scored highly across the board.
Peugeot 5008 or Skoda Kodiaq dimensions
There’s very little that separates these two models in terms of dimensions. The Peugeot 5008 is 4,641mm long, 2,098mm wide (including mirrors) and 1,646mm tall.
The Skoda Kodiaq is 4,699mm long, 2,087mm wide and 1,685mm tall. You can also get five-seat Kodiaqs in entry-level trims, which are 2mm shorter in length and 4mm shorter in height.
