Small cars with big boots

You don’t need a big car to have plenty of boot space – see our favourite small cars that can store all your luggage, shopping, pushchairs, and more

Audi A1 front three quarters

A small car with a big boot isn’t actually that hard to find, as long as you bear in mind it won't be quite as spacious as estate cars and SUVs on the market.

Not everyone needs a massive car with a huge boot, but that doesn’t mean you want (or need to settle for) a tiny car with no storage either.

Here’s a look at some of the best small cars with big boots so you can get the best of both worlds.

Find our top picks below.

The best small cars with big boots

Skoda Fabia

Skoda Fabia front three quarters

The sleek Fabia hatchback has a seriously impressive boot space when you consider it’s the smallest car that Skoda offers – though the Czech brand does have a reputation for big boots.

You’ll get 380 litres as standard, and this can extend to 1,190 litres if you fold down the back seats.

That’s around the same size as the Volkswagen Golf, which is the slightly larger car. You’ll never be embarrassed in an IKEA carpark with all that space.

Volkswagen Polo

Another car that’s similarly small in size, but has a big boot, is the iconic Volkswagen Polo.

It’s a similar size to the Fabia (which it shares some underpinnings with) and the Ford Fiesta, making it a great pick for those after a city car and fancy the Polo’s styling.

Here you’ll have a 351-litre space to fill, and you can fold the rear seats to boost that to 1,125 litres.

That’s plenty to easily fit a pushchair or a couple suitcases, making it one of the best ‘small car, big boot’ combos on the market.

Mini Clubman

The Mini Clubman is one of the larger small cars on the list, so its 360-litre boot isn’t quite as impressive as it would be if it had a smaller footprint

Still, it’s still a hefty amount of space that can extend to 1,250 litres with the seats down.

The reason we think it deserves a mention on this list are its split-folding boot doors. They’re a bit like a van’s back doors, but smaller, making the Clubman very easy to load up even in low-ceiling car parks.

It’s one of the best small cars with big boots if ease of loading is important to you – pet owners are particularly big fans.

SEAT Ibiza

The SEAT Ibiza has one of the biggest boots in the supermini class, so you can easily justify it as a practical car.

With 355 litres of space to load up, and 823 litres if you fold the rear seats down, you can’t ask for much more.

This means it might not be as helpful as other small cars with big boots if you want to use it for flat pack furniture trips or for picking up your Facebook Marketplace bargains – but it’s still plenty roomy.

Renault Clio

The Renault Clio is one of the best small cars with big boots for the sheer amount of space you get when you consider its size.

The official number is a 391-litre boot in the petrol car, and this can jump to 1,069 litres if you fold the rear seats.

Keep in mind that the Clio E-Tech electric model sacrifices some of that boot space to make way for the batteries, and the diesel is also smaller because of the AdBlue tank.

That leaves us with a 301-litre boot in the E-Tech, and 366 litres for the diesel.

Audi A1

If you fancy a premium small car but still want plenty of boot space, the Audi A1 has 335 litres to offer.

Better yet, it can extend to 1,090 litres if you fold down the rear seats. This makes it bigger than rivals like the Toyota Yaris and Ford Fiesta, but it is beaten out by some other models on this list.

Older Audi A1 models actually have a smaller boot, with the latest generation gaining 65 litres.

Bear this in mind if you’re shopping used cars – the first-gen Audi A1 has slightly less carrying capacity.

Find a used small car with a big boot

So, if you’re looking for a small car with big boot offerings then you’re not exactly out of luck.

There are plenty of compact models that are suitable for family trips, shopping sprees, and when you forgot to measure how big that parcel pick-up would really be.

The Renault Clio and Skoda Fabia are leading the pack, though we still think you should consider the Mini Clubman for that handy boot opening.
