What is the best Ford car?

Ford makes many different models and choosing one can be tricky. But which is the best for you?

Ford has been making cars for well over a century, and its more modern cars are known for being some of the best on the roads.

They’re affordable, high-quality and reasonably fun to drive. Whether it’s a regular hatchback, a popular SUV, or one of the brand’s other models, there’s plenty to choose from.

We pick out some of the company’s most popular cars in this guide to the best Ford cars.

Ford Fiesta

The most popular engine by far is the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol – it’s quick and responsive but can manage diesel-like fuel economy.

Because the Fiesta has been so popular, there are plenty to choose from. We recommend going for the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine in one of the higher trim levels, such as Titanium.

Ford Focus

It’s much cheaper than a Volkswagen Golf and has more rear passenger space than a Peugeot 308.

Ford released a new version of the Focus in 2018, and it’s a noticeable step up in quality compared with the previous version.

Unless you do a lot of motorway driving or need the extra power, the same 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine is the best pick for most drivers.

Focus – a classic mid-sized Ford car

The Focus is a household name by now and is a sensible choice for hatchback drivers who don’t see the appeal of paying a large premium to sit behind the wheel of a more premium competitor.

Ford Mondeo

The Mondeo is a hugely practical saloon-shaped car – you can get four-door saloon versions, five-door hatchback versions, and estate models.

The latter two have wider boot openings, so they’re better for getting large items in and out of the boot.

There are hybrid versions, but they’re not particularly economical – long-distance drivers are best served by the diesels while town drivers will find the petrol more suitable.

Mondeo – the top Ford car for long distances?

The Mondeo is a car primarily designed to cater to company car drivers who spend a lot of their time on the motorway, so it’s been built to be comfortable and economical.

There are plenty of touches inside, like easy-reach cupholders, which add to the appeal.

Ford Mustang

The 5.0-litre V8 offers the most authentic feel, but there’s also a 2.3-litre petrol engine for those after a slightly more economical version.

It can still do 0-62mph in 5.8 seconds but it can save you hundreds on your car tax bill.

Mustang – the best Ford for speed?

The V8 version can get to 62mph in 4.8 seconds, and while the Focus ST is 0.1 seconds quicker than the Mustang 2.3 and the Focus RS is 0.1 seconds faster than the Mustang V8, little comes close to offering the thrilling sensation of a true muscle car icon.

Ford EcoSport

a bue ford ecosport parked next to a lake with two boats inAlthough it’s a crossover, it shares many of its mechanical parts with the Ford Fiesta, including the highly acclaimed 1.0-litre petrol engine.

Because you sit higher but the car isn’t much bigger, it offers good visibility around town without compromising on manoeuvrability in tight spaces.

EcoSport – the most fuel-efficient used Ford car?

If you like the idea of having a tall vehicle but don’t want a full-size SUV, then the EcoSport should make for a cheap model to run.

It’s worth noting that newer Ford cars, such as the Puma, have mild hybrid assistance, which reduces CO2 emissions (and tax) and improves fuel economy even further.

Ford Puma

This is another Ford crossover based on the Fiesta, but it feels a lot more plush inside than an EcoSport. It’s a petrol-only model, and most are mild hybrids.

It’s also one of the most affordable sporty crossovers, especially if you’re willing to buy used, with a pair of ST models available.

There’s a 170hp 1.0-litre mild hybrid petrol version and a 200hp 1.5-litre model, which can do 0-62mph in 7.4 and 6.7 seconds respectively.

Puma – the best Ford small family car?

Although it’s reasonably small, we like the family-friendly touches that make it great for kids and pets.

All models have a large 456-litre boot and a 68-litre space under the boot floor that has a drainage plug – great for hosing it out after storing your muddy boots inside.

Ford Kuga

The Ford Kuga has a lot of competition, including popular models like the Nissan Qashqai, but it has plenty of unique points that help it stand out.

All the materials insight are good quality and the large touchscreen is easy to use. Fortunately, there are still physical controls for things like temperature and volume, which isn’t the case for some other SUVs.

Growing families after more space will value how light the car’s controls are around town.

Even better are the regular and plug-in hybrid versions – the PHEV can do around 30-40 miles between charges, which opens up the possibility of cheap motoring.

Ford Galaxy

Ford’s biggest car is one of the most capable seven-seaters available from any car brand, with even the rearmost seats being suitable for adults.

Buy a new one and you’ll be limited to a regular hybrid setup, but most used examples have a 2.0-litre diesel, which we think is much better suited to the car’s size and weight.

All models are well-equipped, but keep an eye out for range-topping Titanium specs for all the bells and whistles.

Galaxy – the biggest Ford car?

At 4,848mm long and 1,747mm tall, the Galaxy occupies a lot of space. Its 2,137mm width is also noticeable in tight car parks, for example.

What all of this means, though, is a lot of passenger and boot space.
