How long do Tesla batteries last?
Teslas are some of the most popular electric cars on the roads – but how long do their batteries last and what do they cost to replace?
Battery life on a Tesla
Tesla is one of the pioneering manufacturers of the electric cars, producing a range of vehicles that are heavily coveted.
Range anxiety and concerns about battery health are common among new electric vehicle (EV) owners and those considering making the switch. Many motorists are worried that EV battery health can rapidly decline and the idea of purchasing an expensive new battery can put motorists off the idea. Fortunately, replacing an electric vehicle’s battery in any car isn’t an issue you’re likely to run into for a very long time.
Tesla claims that its EVs batteries can last between 300,000 to 500,000 miles before you might need to replace them. This means they should last 1,500 battery charge cycles, which is impressive considering that a Model 3 Long Range can go up to 374 miles on a full charge.
Most EV manufacturers claim that batteries can last up to 10 years or 100,000 miles, so Tesla’s claims are more ambitious. Tesla also offers a battery warranty of up to eight years or 100,000 miles, so you know it has faith these batteries are made to last.
Tesla battery replacement cost
Replacing the battery in any EV – not just a Tesla – is likely the most expensive repair that you will ever have to make on your vehicle, so it’s great that this isn’t something you’ll need to think about for a long while.
Since Teslas are a more premium brand of car, replacing batteries and other parts can be more expensive.
If your car battery falls below 70% of charge capacity while still in warranty, Tesla will replace it for you. It’s rare this will happen though, as EVs will usually retain much of their charge capacity even after covering thousands of miles.
The average cost of an EV battery usually works out as £87 per kWh (in 2021). For example, the Model 3 Long Range model has a 75kWh battery so will likely cost around £6,525 to replace.
These prices will vary, so make sure you check with a trusted supplier to get the most accurate cost.
Tesla battery capacity
The battery capacity of a Tesla helps you determine the mile range that it can cover, how long it will take to charge, and how much it might cost to replace the battery in the future.
Tesla Model 3 battery capacity
The Tesla Model 3 has a usable battery capacity of around 57.5kWh, while Long Range and Performance variants offer 75kWh.
Tesla Model Y battery capacity
The capacity of the Tesla Model Y Long Range is usually 75kWh, while the standard all-wheel- and rear-wheel-drive models offer 57kWh.
Tesla Model S battery capacity
The Tesla Model S features an 85kWh battery in the all-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive models, while there’s also a 70kWh battery on offer.
