What insurance group is a Kia Sportage?
Learn about Kia Sportage insurance groups and why they're important to know
Overview of Kia Sportage insurance groups
There are more than five different Kia Sportage trim levels spanning different model years, all of which are in their own insurance group.
But, what models are in which group, and why does this affect insurance costs?
Insurance group ratings explained
Firstly, let’s get into what insurance group ratings are and why they’re important to know when buying your next car.
Your car’s insurance group is decided by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) who place the vehicle into a group between one and 50.
They were first introduced in the 1970s to help determine the cost of car insurance and have expanded and developed since, growing from 20 to 50 groups in 2009.
The group is calculated using a number of criteria:
Performance of the vehicle
Cost of repair
Price when new
Model-specific insurance group details
Different Kia Sportage models sit in different insurance groups because power outputs vary, as do safety features, tech and weight.
Kia Sportage 2: Insurance groups 15-17
Kia Sportage 3: Insurance groups 16-25
Kia Sportage 4: Insurance groups 19-25
Kia Sportage GT-Line: Insurance groups 16-24
Kia Sportage GT-Line S: Insurance groups 20-26
Factors affecting Kia Sportage insurance costs
There are a range of factors that can affect insurance costs, aside from information about the driver.
For the car, it can be anything from the size of the engine and the power it produces to what onboard safety features it has.
Safety features
The basic Sportage 2 already comes well-equipped with a range of safety features, including front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, lane keep assist, hill-start assist, downhill brake control and a tyre pressure monitoring system, to name a few.
But upgrade to the top-spec Sportage GT-Line S and you get added tech such as a remote parking system, motorway driving assist, smart cruise control and drive modes for mud, sand and snow.
Vehicle performance
One of the big factors affecting the insurance price is what’s under the bonnet.
Thankfully on the new Sportage, engine options are kept nice and simple with just one petrol 1.6-litre to choose from.
However, the differences lie with the power outputs and their insurance groups.
Kia Sportage engine options:
Petrol:
1.6 T-GDi 48V manual gearbox, (155hp), 2WD – group 18
1.6 T-GDi 48V automatic gearbox, (155hp), 2WD – group 20
Hybrid:
1.6 T-GDi hybrid, (204hp), 2WD – group 25

Plug-in hybrid:

How to get the best insurance rates for a Kia Sportage
Shopping for insurance
Before insuring your car, it’s vital you shop around to try and get the best deal possible. High insurance premiums are affecting us all, so the cheaper we can get it, the better.
The best way to do this is to go onto insurance comparison sites and see what different lenders can offer you. You’d be surprised how much prices can vary.
Tailoring your policy
When searching for your exact insurance policy, it’s well worth tailoring it to your needs.
This includes evaluating your annual mileage, considering how you label your job title, adding a black box and/or named driver and looking into where you park your car overnight.
There are so many different things to think about; it’s certainly worth doing your research.
