Power comes from punchy petrol and diesel models, and while manual gearboxes can be fun to use, the TCT automatic is a strong pick. 

All models are also well equipped as standard, with a very functional and clean interior. Though there’s plenty of tech built into the car, the layout places an emphasis on the driving experience. Trims include the Super, Speciale and Veloce.

Alfa Romeo no longer sells the Giulietta, and there has been no direct replacement, marking the end of the Italian brand’s production of family hatchbacks.

Entry-level models feature six speakers, a digital radio, Bluetooth connectivity and air-con. It’s worth seeking a 2013-onward model for the improved infotainment system. 

The entire cabin is well put-together and offers a nice finish – and it features USB phone chargers too.  

Rear passenger space is impressive and similar to that of its rivals. There are also ISOFIX child seat mounts, so you can rest assured your kids will be safe in the back.  

Its 350-litre boot is fairly average for this class of car, so it’s capable of handling family life.
