What is the BMW 3 Series M340i?

BMW’s fastest performance cars, such as the M3, are typically only bought by enthusiasts because they can be very pricey to run.

A BMW M340i bridges the gap between a used 3 Series and an M3 by offering plenty of power and acceleration, but considerably more manageable running costs.

It’s based on the high-spec M Sport model, but being a performance model, it has a few sporty tweaks and extra bits of kit.

What are the BMW 3 Series M340i specs?

The M340i badge specifically refers to the engine, so this model only comes with one option – a 3.0-litre straight-six petrol.

It has 374hp and 500Nm of torque, which combined with the eight-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive, gets this car from 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds.

Depending on model year, the M340i gets mild hybrid tech, which helps to reduce emissions (and your car tax bill) as well as improve fuel economy slightly.

Some of the key highlights of an M340i are the large 19-inch alloy wheels, the adaptive M suspension, an M Sport differential and plenty of other sporty styling.

You’ll also get a large touchscreen infotainment system, heated seats, leather upholstery, a digital instrument cluster, cruise control, LED headlights, three-zone climate control, all-round parking sensors and a reversing camera.

The BMW M340i is the highest-spec version of the 3 Series you can get, besides the performance M3 model, which is expensive. There’s also a similar M340d diesel variant that comes with the same equipment as an M340i model.

At the top of the standard BMW 3 Series range are sporty M Sport models, which are some of the most desirable. You can also get M Sport Plus Edition cars.

Other models include mid-spec Sport and entry-level SE, but they all come with more than you might think, so there’s no bad pick.
