What types of used BMW 4 Series cars are there?

The BMW 4 Series sits in a strong position in the car market, filling the gap between a sporty weekend car and an everyday luxury commuter.

> BMW 4 Series Sport – original base-spec version but still came well-equipped with all the options you’d need for a luxury coupé 

> BMW 4 Series M Sport – current base-spec that gets LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels as well as front and rear parking sensors 

> BMW 4 Series M440i – as sporty as it gets before the proper M4, with beefier brakes, adaptive suspension, sports steering and an M Sport differential 

BMW 4 Series history 

The 4 Series is a mainstay in BMW’s lineup at this point, and it’s had a couple of different generations and facelifts over the years. 

> First-generation BMW 4 Series (2013-2020) - spiritual successor of the E92 3 Series, with two doors and sporty styling (3 Series are now all four-door saloons) 

> Second-generation BMW 4 Series (2020-present) - with a tweaked design and new tech, it’s far more upmarket than before, which was already hard to beat

They also get a digital instrument cluster plus an updated version of iDrive, the company’s highly acclaimed infotainment system.  

Older post-facelift models come with similar levels of equipment but look out for the upgraded Professional Media infotainment system, sold as an optional extra.  

The coupé model has a boot big enough to rival most hatchbacks., Watch out for convertible models, because the folding roof eats into the available storage space a bit. 

Is the BMW 4 Series reliable?

Because the 4 Series shares many of its parts with other BMW models, it benefits from tried-and-tested parts.  

A used BMW 4 Series has an industry-average three-year warranty, but there’s no mileage cap, so some newer BMW 4 Series cars for sale might still be covered. 

How much does the BMW 4 Series cost to run?

Over the years, there's been a range of 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre engines available.  

But there’s a range of mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid engines on offer.  

If you want the ultimate combo, the 190hp 420d strikes an excellent balance between performance and fuel efficiency. 

Who is the BMW 4 Series suitable for?

A used BMW 4 Series is a great pick for the style-conscious, but it’s also a model that you can buy with your head – it’s surprisingly practical and used examples are great value
