What is the BMW 7 Series M Sport?

A BMW 7 Series M Sport is the ultimate recipe for the ultimate car because it combines an already very plush flagship model with the German brand’s most popular and desirable trim level.

M Sport models are designed to look similar to BMW’s performance M cars, but they come with far more efficient engines to help keep running costs more manageable.

As well as the latest G70 models (2022-onward), you can pick from sixth-generation G11 models built between 2015 and 2022, and fifth-generation F01 cars built from 2008 to 2015, so there should be a model to suit most budgets and requirements.

What are the BMW 7 Series M Sport specs?

There are lots of engines available, but most buyers opt for a 3.0-litre diesel with either 265hp (730d) or 320hp (740d). There’s also a 2.0-litre model (725d) with 231hp.

Drivers with access to a charging point, and those doing shorter commutes, will benefit from one of the plug-in hybrids. Earlier 740e models have 326hp from a 2.0-litre engine setup, and more recent models come with a 3.0-litre setup and 394hp.

There are also some petrol cars, including the 3.0-litre 326hp 740i and the 450hp/530hp (depending on model year) 750i, which has a 4.4-litre V8.

The latest-generation models come with either a 489hp plug-in hybrid setup (750e) or electric motors, which produce 455hp for the i7 eDrive50 or 544hp for the i7 xDrive60.

Standard kit varies by model year and generation, but a BMW 7 Series M Sport will come with far more standard kit than most other cars on the market, so there won’t be a bad pick.

As a guide, the latest models have adaptive LED headlights, soft-close doors, a powered boot lid, keyless entry, air suspension, cruise control, all-round parking sensors, a reversing camera, four-zone climate control, heated seats, an upgraded sound system, a digital driver’s display and a large touchscreen infotainment system.

Even previous-generation models can come with things like a large panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, gesture control for the infotainment system, a 360-degree parking camera and massaging seats.

Where the 7 Series M Sport sits in the BMW range

Not only is M Sport a sportier-looking variant, but it’s also a high-spec edition of any BMW car, including the 7 Series.

In the case of the latest model. Entry-level Excellence models come with virtually the same amount of kit, and there are also performance versions, such as the i7 M70 xDrive and the 760e xDrive.

Previously, there were SE, SE Exclusive, Exclusive, and M Sport Exclusive cars to pick from, as well as other powerful variants like the M760Li, which has a 6.6-litre V12 with up to 610hp.

Keep an eye out for models with an ‘L’ in the model name, because these have a longer wheelbase and a more upmarket feel.
