Start nowBMW uses ‘M’ for its highest-performance cars, and the M3 is an all-singing, all-dancing version of its regular 3 Series.
The most common option is the saloon, but before the 4 Series split off to become its own sporty-looking model, you could get an M3 Coupé or M3 Convertible if that was more your speed.
In 2022, BMW added the M3 Touring to the family – this was the first time that you could buy an estate version of the iconic M3.
Popular BMW M3 trims
The M3 is seen as a trim in its own right, sitting above the standard 3 Series models and quick M340i/M340d models.
> BMW M3 - not available from new in the UK anymore, the latest model has a 480hp engine and a 0-62mph time of 4.2 seconds
> BMW M3 Competition - this considerable upgrade boosts power to 510hp and reduces the 0-62mph time to 3.9 seconds
> BMW M3 Competition M xDrive - specially tuned four-wheel-drive system and 530hp, 0-62mh in 3.5 seconds
BMW M3 history
BMW launched the dedicated M3 model for its second-generation 3 Series, the E30 model. Since then, a steady stream of M3s have captured the hearts of enthusiasts globally.
> BMW M3 F80 (2014) - this had a 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six engine with 431hp, marking a slight power upgrade over its V8 predecessor
> BMW M3 G80 (2020) - the latest model has even more power, a more tech-heavy interior and an angry-looking grille
> BMW M3 Touring G81 (2022) - this is the first even M3 Touring you can buy – it’s a seriously quick family estate
The highlight of any BMW M3 is its engine. Most generations over the years have used a six-cylinder engine, with the exception of the E90 series, which was on sale between 2007 and 2013. That used a 4.0-litre V8.
Whichever used BMW M3 for sale you pick, you can be sure that it’ll come with all the bells and whistles. They’re all based on the high-spec trim levels.
For the latest G80 M3, you get LED headlights, three-zone climate control, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, heated front seats and BMW’s excellent iDrive infotainment system.
Other upgrades include carbon fibre trim pieces, adaptive sports suspension, uprated brakes and an aggressive body kit.
The 3 Series, including the M3, has been a staple in the BMW range for decades. In that time, the German manufacturer has perfected the formula.
The M3 is fundamentally a souped-up 3 Series, which is great news for reliability because this popular saloon is favoured by company car drivers and families for its longevity.
A bigger engine and other modifications add some complexity, and while there’s nothing to say these should be any less reliable, be prepared for higher-than-average bills.
The BMW M3 is strictly a performance model, which means the engine is designed to maximise power. As such, there’s no mild hybrid technology as you’d get on the more affordable M340i.
Official fuel economy figures for the M3 Competition are 27.7mpg and that’s before you start adding the four-wheel-drive system or the extra weight of the estate. CO2 emissions are high, too, which means car tax can be pricey.
The BMW M3 is more expensive to run than a normal saloon because, well, it’s not normal. Fuel costs, insurance and maintenance will be higher, but for those who can live with the higher bills, it’s a car that really can do it all.
A used BMW M3 for sale is designed to appeal to driving enthusiasts – it’s engaging, handles outstandingly, and is blisteringly quick.
It’s a two-in-one car for anyone able to live with the high running costs of a sports car, because it doubles as a very sensible family car when needed.
There is competition, though. Cars like the Audi RS4 (based on the A4), Mercedes C63 (based on the C-Class) and Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio all have the M3 firmly in their sights.
The BMW M3's M TwinPower Turbo engine combines twin-scroll turbocharging and high-precision injection to deliver punchy performance.
This technology optimises power delivery, ensuring a dynamic and exhilarating driving experience, producing an impressive 510hp.
The M3's driving modes, such as Comfort, Sport and Sport+ allow drivers to tailor the car's dynamics to various scenarios.
From a smooth, comfortable ride in Comfort mode to an exhilarating and responsive performance in Sport and Sport+.
The BMW M3, introduced in 1986, is an iconic high-performance sports saloon. Known for its motorsport heritage, it has evolved through several generations, consistently delivering a thrilling driving experience and setting benchmarks in the sports car segment.
The BMW M3 has an illustrious motorsports history, achieving numerous victories in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC).
