Kia e-Niro history
The Niro was first introduced in 2016, but the e-Niro didn’t come along until 2019. It stayed on sale until the second-generation Kia Niro arrived in 2022.

All models come with the essentials, such as air-conditioning, adaptive cruise control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear parking sensors and a reversing camera.
Higher-spec models, as well as newer cars, add plenty of upgrades, including a bigger infotainment system and uprated speakers.
Top-of-the-line 4 and 4+ cars include things you’d only usually expect in more premium models, like cooled front seats and more advanced safety systems.
Just like any other Kia, the e-Niro benefits from Kia’s excellent seven-year/100,000-mile warranty. Thankfully, the battery is also included in that coverage.
Electric cars have fewer moving parts compared to combustion engines, so there’s less to go wrong. Kia is also maintaining its reputation for reliability with the e-Niro so far.
There are two battery sizes available for the Kia e-Niro – a small 39kWh unit capable of a claimed 180 miles and a much larger 64kWh pack which promises around another 100 miles.
If you have access to cheap off-peak electricity rates, you could save hundreds in fuel compared with a petrol or diesel crossover over the year.
The Kia e-Niro is an excellent pick for growing families who need space in the back, and enough storage in the boot for all the kit that comes with having a family.
It shares parts with the Hyundai Kona Electric, but the e-Niro is slightly bigger. You could also consider the BYD Atto 3 or Peugeot e-2008.
Charging the Kia e-Niro is simple – all you need to do is open up the port on the front of the car and plug into a Type 2 charger (or a CCS connector for rapid charging).
It supports 7kW charging, which is pretty standard, and some top-spec cars were also equipped with faster 11kW speeds. The 77kW rapid charging speed is lower than many of its rivals (100-150kW), but it’s decent enough for a mid-sized car.
The Kia e-Niro is fully electric. There’s a less powerful option with a smaller battery and a more powerful option with a bigger battery.
Don’t confuse the e-Niro (now Niro EV) with the Niro – the Kia Niro is available with hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) power options.
If range is important to you, the 64kWh battery is the better option. Kia claims up to 282 miles of motoring between charges.
The smaller 39kWh battery reduces the range significantly, to around 180 miles.
Keep in mind that real-world range is likely to be a decent amount less than Kia's claimed range.
Kia introduced the e-Niro in 2019 alongside its first-generation Niro range. In 2022, the second generation arrived, and the electric version became known as the Niro EV.
The Kia e-Niro has a built-in tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), which will trigger a warning if the pressure in any of the tyres drops below a certain threshold, indicating a potential puncture.
To get rid of the warning, re-inflate the affected tyre(s) or replace any punctured rubber, and the system will detect that everything is back to normal.
