The Lexus NX is a mid-sized family SUV designed to take on the higher end of the market, so it faces stiff competition from popular German alternatives like the BMW X3.

The NX’s standout feature is its hybrid powertrain – while early models were available with a turbocharged petrol engine, most NX cars were sold with one of the hybrid options.

You get a 2.5-litre petrol engine and a range of battery and motor configurations, including a new plug-in hybrid, which you can identify by its ‘+’ – it’s called the NX 450h+.

Many years after the bigger RX launched, Lexus introduced this smaller crossover in 2014 when family buyers were shifting from hatchbacks to SUVs.

What features does the Lexus NX have?

Every second-generation Lexus NX comes with LED headlights, front and rear parking sensors, a powered boot lid, heated front seats and a 9.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that received over-the-air (OTA) updates. It also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Previously you could buy optional extras through packs, like the Premium and Takumi Packs. Look out for models with keyless entry, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, cooled front seats, a head-up display and a 360-degree parking camera – these are the most desirable.

F Sport models add adaptive dampers with different drive modes, large alloy wheels and a more aggressive body kit.

Is the Lexus NX reliable?

Yes, a used Lexus NX should be one of the most reliable hybrid SUVs around. Lexus was one of the first companies to sell hybrid cars to the masses, and this translates to an excellent reputation for reliability.

Lexus also has one of the longest warranties in the business. The standard three-year warranty is nothing special, but with annual servicing at eligible garages, you can extend this all the way up to 10 years.

How much does the Lexus NX cost to run?

Gone are the days when SUVs were expensive to run, because the Lexus NX certainly breaks this mould.

The latest self-charging hybrid models promise nearly 50mpg in front-wheel-drive form and 45mpg with four-wheel drive.

Plug-in hybrid models are harder to quantify because it depends on the type of driving you do – Lexus claims up to 282mpg. They have an impressive 40-mile electric-only range.
