Start nowMercedes makes a wide range of plug-in hybrid cars, so there are plenty to choose from. Body styles include hatchbacks, saloons, coupés and SUVs.
In order to rival the likes of BMW and Audi, Mercedes has to make some excellent models, as can be seen by these favourites:
There are many benefits to a Mercedes plug-in hybrid car for sale, starting with the overall environmental impact, which is reduced thanks to the car’s batteries that help reduce tailpipe emissions by relying on the electric motor.
Regenerative braking also helps convert energy back into the battery, minimising waste.
But most importantly, you get a performance benefit, giving you more instantaneous torque as well as an all-electric range when you’re driving in and around town.
There are some key differences you need to know between a Mercedes plug-in hybrid (PHEV), Mercedes self-charging hybrid (HEV) and a Mercedes mild hybrid (MHEV).
The PHEV can run on electricity alone and be plugged into charge. This is ideal if you live in or commute to a city.
Whereas a standard HEV works between the engine and electric motor to best power the car in the most efficient way possible, seeing high-end MPG figures.
An MHEV is more a petrol or diesel car but with a little assistance from a smaller battery for quick bursts of power and when you crawl at very slow speeds in traffic.
Mercedes plug-in hybrid technology combines the efficiency of electric power with the performance of a combustion engine – giving you the best of both worlds.
These vehicles feature a high-voltage battery and an electric motor that work alongside a traditional engine, providing a seamless driving experience.
Models like the GLC use a fourth-generation plug-in hybrid system, which offers strong power and an all-electric range of around 75 miles.
This system includes a compact, high-voltage battery with an internal cooling system, ensuring optimal performance and quick charging capabilities.
Plus, Mercedes plug-in hybrids also benefit from advanced regenerative braking, which recovers energy during deceleration and stores it in the battery.
Mercedes plug-in hybrid vehicles offer several cost-saving benefits. Fuel costs are significantly reduced, especially for short trips where the electric motor can be used exclusively.
Then, charging at home or work is generally cheaper than refuelling with petrol or diesel, especially if you make the most of a low-cost overnight tariff.
Maintenance costs are generally in line with other luxury brands, but the hybrid system can reduce wear on the combustion engine, potentially lowering long-term maintenance expenses, too.
This depends on what you’re after, but a strong middle ground is something like the Mercedes GLA PHEV – a small SUV.
This varies on the model, but the GLC gets the longest all-electric range of around 75 miles.
It’s not ideal to leave a PHEV plugged in all the time, in the same way a phone or laptop shouldn’t be. Best practice is to charge it to 80% and let it run down to between 10% and 20%.
The same way you’d charge an electric car. Plug it in to your home wall box charger and watch it charge up!
The GLE is bigger than the GLC, so if space is important to you, then get that. But the GLC PHEV does get 75 miles of electric-only range, which is a massive bonus.
