Start nowThe Mercedes V-Class gets its V-based name from the Vito – the German manufacturer’s compact van that has become a popular sight around towns and cities.
By using the ‘Class’ suffix, Mercedes has linked this van-based people carrier more closely to its car lineup, such as the smaller B-Class people carrier.
There are endless configurations when it comes to finding a used Mercedes V-Class for sale, so you can pretty much get a premium MPV to fit your every need.
More modern powertrains use a 2.0-litre diesel engine and a slick nine-speed automatic, but you can find older versions with a more characterful V6 diesel engine.
People carrier versions have a three-seat bench at the back and your choice of two individual seats or another three-seat bench in the middle. Two more seats up front make this a seven- or eight-seat option.
Luxury models have three rows of two individual seats – six in total.
Besides a couple of different wheelbase options, you can also pick up a Marco Polo version. This is Mercedes’ premium answer to the Volkswagen California, or a really desirable campervan.
Popular Mercedes V-Class trims
Mercedes has been selling the V-Class in one form or another (and there are a lot of forms) since 1996, and countless trim levels and equipment packs have been available over the years.
> Mercedes V-Class Premium - newer standard model with adaptive LED headlights, electric sliding side doors, heated seats, a heated steering wheel and a lot of tech on the dashboard
> Mercedes V-Class Exclusive - clue’s in the name, this V-Class gets a digital rear-view mirror, a panoramic sunroof and a Burmester sound system
Mercedes V-Class history
Vans tend to get fewer updates than cars, and while this is true in the sense that Mercedes introduces new generations less frequently, the V-Class has had more minor updates and facelifts than many cars.
> Third-generation Mercedes V-Class W447 (2014) - most of the V-Class and Vito panel vans you’ll see these days belong to this generation
> Facelifted Mercedes V-Class W447 (2019) - design modifications, new powerful diesel engine, tech upgrades and driver aids added
> Facelifted Mercedes V-Class W447 (2023) - this introduced the new multi-display MBUX infotainment system together with stacks of high-end equipment
If your budget can stretch to the second facelift of 2023, then you’ll do just fine with an entry-level model.
These get bright adaptive LED headlights, interior ambient lighting and electric sliding rear doors.
Inside, the V-Class gets heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless phone charging and twin-12.3-inch displays – one for the digital instrument cluster and another for the infotainment system, which works with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. It also shows the 360-degree parking camera.
Besides climbing the trim levels and factoring in AMG-inspired packs, there are some optional extras worth looking out for.
They include a detachable tow bar and a range of products that attach to the headrests for propping up tablets, hanging suits and storing food.
There’s a reason thousands of tradespeople across the UK choose to operate their business from a Vito – it’s an extremely reliable van.
The V-Class continues this excellent reputation for dependability by adding plenty of creature comforts from the brand’s cars, all of which are tried and tested in other models.
Mercedes reckons its 2.0-litre diesel engines will do up to 47mpg in the V-Class, however it’s a heavy van. Factor in extra passengers and luggage and this can quickly plummet.
A used Mercedes V-Class is the one to go for if you have a large family and deep pockets. There’s genuinely acres more room than you’d get in a car-based MPV, and it suits active and busy lifestyles well.
Other desirable models include the Volkswagen Caravelle, which was replaced by the Multivan in 2022, and the Lexus LM. For something more affordable, consider the Ford Tourneo Custom.
The MBUX infotainment system in the Mercedes-Benz V-Class enhances the user experience through a responsive touchscreen and voice control, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Its intuitive interface, in-built sat-nav and connectivity features provide a modern and user-friendly driving environment for passengers.
The Mercedes-Benz V-Class prioritises space in its interior design with a flexible seating arrangement and a spacious cabin.
Configurable layouts, ample headroom and large windows create an open and spacious environment, a bit like a comforting living room.
The V-Class's adaptive driving assistance tech has features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, aiding long-distance journeys by enhancing comfort and safety.
It stands out thanks to its luxurious interior with Mercedes' MBUX system, versatile seating options and a refined driving experience.
By combining elegance with practicality, the V-Class is a solid choice to consider.
The Mercedes-Benz V-Class can be had as a seven-seater, which makes it perfect for large families or a group of friends.
