Start nowThe Korando is the South Korean manufacturer’s answer to the classic family SUV – there are so many of them that it’s become hard to stand out.
SsangYong makes its family SUV stand out for three reasons – its relative affordability, strong warranty, and genuine SUV credentials.
For example, you can get four-wheel-drive variants that are great for taking down muddy tracks, and you can also pick from strong diesel engines that make this a great tow car.
Popular SsangYong Korando trims
It would be reasonable to expect this budget-friendly SUV to be pretty poorly equipped on lower-spec models, but that’s simply not the case.
> SsangYong Korando ELX - entry-level car with automatic lights and wipers, cruise control and lots of safety kit, including AEB, lane-keep assist and automatic high beams
> SsangYong Korando Ventura - this is the one you want, it gets an eight-inch display with smartphone connectivity, all-round parking sensors and a reversing camera and heated front part-faux-leather seats
> SsangYong Korando Ultimate - you get full leather upholstery, cooled seats, a heated steering wheel, keyless entry and a bigger screen
SsangYong Korando history
The Korando badge was first used on a remanufactured Jeep CJ-7 with a choice of Isuzu engines.
Decades later, the third-generation model we often see on British roads was launched, and several updates have come since.
> Third-generation SsangYong Korando (2010) - one of SsangYong’s earlier efforts to tackle the UK market with European-like levels of comfort and refinement
> Facelifted SsangYong Korando (2013) - redesigned front end and more equipment options
> Facelifted SsangYong Korando (2017) - minor updates to bring the Korando in line with newer models, such as the Tivoli
> Fourth-generation SsangYong Korando (2019) - smarter, more angular design with lots of kit and new efficient engines
> SsangYong Korando e-Motion (2022) - electric version of this mid-sized SUV launched with a range of more than 200 miles
> KGM Korando (2023) - SsangYong became KGM in 2023, and while some tweaks were made to trim levels, this is very much still the same car
Safety equipment across the entire Korando range is strong, with fourth-generation models getting AEB, forward collision warning, lane-keep assist, driver attention assist and automatic high beams.
You’ll need to step up to Ventura cars for tech like an eight-inch infotainment display and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. You get a bigger nine-inch central display on the top-spec Ultimate with TomTom sat-nav integration, but both systems support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Depending on the spec you go for, luxuries like heated and cooled front seats, a heated steering wheel, all-round parking sensors, a reversing camera and keyless entry are all available.
Don’t be put off that SsangYong – or KGM – is one of the lesser-known brands in Britain, because it’s very popular in other markets, where it has a reputation for building robust cars.
In the UK, the Korando is sold with a seven-year warranty, which is one of the best in the business.
You can pick up a used Korando pretty cheap, and insurance groups in the mid-20s make it a reasonably affordable thing to keep on the roads.
Where this car is slightly let down is its engine options – the petrol will do around 35mpg and the diesel around 45mpg.
It’s not that they’re inefficient, it’s just that other manufacturers have more economical mild hybrid, full hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants available.
Cars with four-wheel drive are likely to be less efficient still.
The typical buyer of a used SsangYong Korando for sale will likely be a family or an outdoor enthusiast, but it’s also one for those who prioritise value for money.
If you’re after an affordable family SUV, you could also consider the MG HS, Dacia Duster or Suzuki S-Cross.
Prices for a used SsangYong Korando on finance differ depending on the model you choose as different trims and added features affect the pricing. It’s best to take a look at our current stock page to get the most accurate and up to date prices.
You can get a used Korando on finance. Options like Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) and Hire Purchase (HP) allow you to spread the cost of your car across several payments and can be used for Korando models.
SsangYong is a relatively new brand in the UK that’s just building up a fanbase, mainly built on the reliability and solid build of its models. Cars are affordable yet well-equipped, and they can be practical options even if you need a large seven-seater.
The Korando comes with a few engine choices – there's a 1.5-litre petrol option and a 1.6-litre diesel option. You can also choose between a manual or automatic gearbox.
The Korando is a great car if you’re after something spacious and practical, with a 551-litre boot and a comfortable cabin that offers plenty of head and legroom. The engine options are sturdy and not too greedy on fuel and there’s lots of built-in tech depending on the trim level.
