Start nowThe Vauxhall Mokka X was a small SUV, also known as a crossover, that came after the Mokka. The addition of the ‘X’ signified a facelift, rather than a brand-new car, so if you like this car, it’s well worth scouting out an updated ‘X’ version.
It went off sale in 2019, and wasn’t replaced until 2021 when a totally redesigned crossover arrived, which dropped the ‘X’ and reverted to its original Mokka name.
Popular Vauxhall Mokka X trims
Vauxhall’s lineup isn’t short of trim levels, and understanding which is which can be challenging. It’s worth delving into any individual listing if you want over and above what comes as standard, which is already a really strong baseline.
> Vauxhall Mokka X Active - cheapest option with seven-inch touchscreen, dual-zone climate control and cruise control
> Vauxhall Mokka X Griffin - popular special edition model with heated seats and wheel, high beam assist and part-faux-leather upholstery
> Vauxhall Mokka X Elite - this high-spec version includes high-quality leather and chrome details
Vauxhall Mokka X history
The Mokka first came about in 2012, but the facelifted Mokka X didn’t arrive on the scene until 2016.
> First-generation Vauxhall Mokka (2012) - smart-looking and well-appointed crossover with efficient front-wheel-drive options plus a clever 4x4 option
> Vauxhall Mokka X (2016) - restyled bumpers, headlights, tail lights and a new interior design, plus revisions to the engine options
> Second-generation Vauxhall Mokka (2021) - completely new look, sharing parts with the Peugeot 2008, DS 3 Crossback and Citroen C4, with an electric option
Mokka X specifically refers to the facelifted first-generation Vauxhall Mokka, which means you’ll be looking at cars sold between 2016 and 2019.
This was a great era for Vauxhalls, because all trim levels were based on a high standard. Every Mokka X gets a seven-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, cruise control and large alloy wheels.
Upgraded models with ‘Nav’ in their names add sat-nav on a larger eight-inch display, as well as things like front seat and steering wheel heating, automatic high beams and leather trim.
The Vauxhall Mokka X is a pretty average car regarding reliability – some early diesel engines had some dependability concerns, but these were largely addressed in later cars, so prioritise finding a newer car over a higher trim level if budget allows.
Running costs can vary, but if you find one of the lower-powered petrol or diesel cars, then you’ll hardly spend any more than you would in a hatchback.
More powerful engines, especially those paired with the heavier four-wheel-drive system, can be less efficient.
Happily, the Mokka X sits in insurance groups 8-16, which means it’s cheaper than many crossovers when it comes to that dreaded big annual spend.
A used Vauxhall Mokka X is a compelling option for young families who want a capable, versatile crossover, but it’s also a car worth considering for anyone living an active lifestyle who wants a rugged-looking SUV with a decent-sized boot – it’s about the same as a family hatchback.
Other crossovers at a similar pricepoint include the Nissan Juke, or you might consider another Vauxhall like the Grandland, Crossland X or Crossland.
This model is available with either front-wheel drive (FWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD) – but obviously fuel efficiency is increased on the FWD model when compared to the 4WD variant.
This is the model that took over from the Mokka, and set out to iron out any imperfections the old model may have had.
This is much larger than the Corsa, despite sharing the same platform. It offers increased legroom, headroom and boot space.
This model is slightly longer and wider than the Crossland X, making it a larger vehicle overall. You may be forgiven for thinking it’s taller and narrower because of its higher roofline, however this isn’t the case.
