Start nowIn Volvo speak, S signifies its saloon models, and the 60 family is the middle of the line, sitting below the larger 90 and above the smaller 30 and 40 models.
An S60 is an executive saloon that’s primarily designed for company car drivers to crunch up the motorway miles, but it’s just as capable as a family car.
Like its rivals, there is an estate version, but it’s badged V60 and sold as an entirely separate car.
Popular Volvo S60 trims
For years, Volvo used Momentum, Inscription and R-Design trim levels, with a few Pro variants. They’re all lavishly specced. In 2022, new trim levels were rolled out across the entire Volvo range.
> Volvo S60 R-Design Plus - sporty-looking car with head-up display, powered front seats and glossy black details
> Volvo S60 Inscription Plus - high-spec model with soft leather upholstery, cooled front seats and premium wood, crystal and chrome finishes
> Volvo S60 Polestar Engineered - besides the 318hp plug-in hybrid setup, this car gets uprated brakes, a sports chassis and large 19-inch Y-spoke alloys
Volvo S60 history
The S60 has been a staple in the executive saloon market since 2000, when the first-generation car landed in Europe. It got a much-needed update after a decade, and another one after nine more years.
> Second-generation Volvo S60 (2010) - modern design with high-quality interior, soft-touch materials and economical engines
> Facelifted Volvo S60 (2014) - new front end, upgraded in-car tech and some added safety features
> Third-generation Volvo S60 (2019) - sharp-looking and luxurious upgrade in line with Volvo’s newer design language, with many mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid options
The Volvo S60 is designed to be a premium saloon, so it comes packed with kit. As standard you get a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a nine-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen infotainment system.
Outside, there are front and rear parking sensors, active bending LED headlights, automatic high beams and LED fog lights.
Inside, you get push-button start, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats and cruise control.
Look out for equipment that was sold as optional packs – not tied to trim levels. Things such as a heated steering wheel, a 360-degree parking camera and upgraded sound systems from Harman/Kardon or Bowers & Wilkins are all very desirable.
Volvo is known for building cars that are as reliable as they are safe, and the S60 got a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating when it was launched with exceptional scores for adult occupant protection.
It’s exclusively available with 2.0-litre petrol engines with a mix of mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid technology for improved fuel economy.
Because it shares parts like these with the V60, XC60 and other Volvo models, you can be sure that the components have had to prove their worth over the years.
If you go for one of the more powerful petrol engines, like the T5, then you might be lucky to see 30mpg around town. It’s a shame that there are no diesel engines for strong efficiency on motorway trips.
Mild hybrids are the pick for many drivers, but if you spend a lot of time around town, the a plug-in hybrid could net you up to 56 miles of electric-only range.
A used Volvo S60 for sale offers drivers and families an insight into the higher end of the market – it’s an exceptional saloon with impressive attention to detail.
You can save thousands compared with new, making the plug-in hybrid models most attractive.
The S60 is designed to take on cars like the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class, but none really come close to offering the refinement of this Swedish masterpiece.
The Volvo S60 is most definitely a luxury car. It offers an incredible interior that rivals cars in higher classes, and its overall style is very fancy indeed.
The S60 isn’t an inherently fast car, but with 250hp or 405hp, it's no slouch. In its quickest form, the S60 T8 can launch itself from 0-60mph in just 4.7 seconds, which is about the same as a 90s Ferrari.
We would say the S60 is fuel efficient, with both models claiming to return around 35mpg.
This premium saloon is very quiet, and when you’re inside, you feel as though you’re in an electric car – it’s really rather special.
