Start nowThe BMW 2 Series family is a pretty complex one – born out of coupé and convertible successors to the BMW 1 Series, the core lineup consists of a sporty, great-to-handle pair of affordable sports cars.
Other 2 Series-branded models are the Gran Coupé, a four-door coupé-like saloon and the Active Tourer –a five-seater MPV, but they’re sold as separate models.
Popular BMW 2 Series trims
BMW uses its standard range of trim levels on the 2 Series, along with plenty of optional extras. There are also some performance editions, which are considered their own trim variants.
> BMW 2 Series M Sport - the second generation includes all-round parking sensors, dual-zone climate control and cruise control
> BMW 2 Series M240i xDrive - 3.0-litre performance variant with stiffer suspension, more aggressive styling and four-wheel drive
BMW 2 Series history
In days gone by, BMW made coupé and convertible versions of the 1 Series and 3 Series, but these split off into the 2 and 4 Series models. The 2 Series was born in 2014, and a second generation followed eight years later.
> First-generation BMW 2 Series F22 (2014) - affordable sports car with 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0-litre engines and a premium interior
> BMW 2 Series F22 update (2016) - more efficient engines and an upgraded infotainment system
> Facelifted BMW 2 Series F22 (2017) - mid-cycle refresh with new LED lights, more aggressive styling and some extra equipment
> Second-generation BMW 2 Series G42 (2022) - completely new look, but retaining its engaging rear-wheel-drive setup
> BMW 2 Series G42 facelift (2024) - high-quality finishes including a new interior and an update to the infotainment system
Every used BMW 2 Series for sale will come with automatic lights and wipers, alloy wheels, rear parking sensors and stylish LED tail lights.
Inside, you get BMW’s excellent iDrive infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity.
Look out for higher trim levels, which add leather upholstery, sports seats and larger alloy wheels, as well as optional extras such as a Harman/Kardon sound system and an upgraded sat-nav.
Second-generation cars are more lavishly equipped – you get things like LED headlights, front parking sensors and a much slicker touchscreen infotainment display.
The BMW 2 series shares many of its parts with other BMW models, such as the 1 Series and 3 Series, and virtually all the mechanical parts like engines and gearboxes are already tried and tested in other models.
On the whole, the German brand typically performs above average when it comes to reliability – often ahead of Mercedes. That being said, it’s still a premium brand, so expect repairs and maintenance to cost a little above average.
Many earlier models were sold with 2.0-litre diesel engines, which offer an excellent punch for their respectable fuel efficiency. The 1.5-litre petrols can be efficient, too, but they’re not as powerful.
Newer and more powerful 2.0-litre petrols perform well, but don’t expect 40mpg unless you’re on the motorway.
The 3.0-litre engine in the M240i is the range-topper (apart from the bonkers M2), but it’ll leave you spending more time at the pump.
It’s also more to insure than the other, lesser-powered engines, but you’d expect that for a car that can do 0-62mph in 4.3 seconds.
A used BMW 2 Series for sale is a seriously stylish coupé (or convertible), whether you’re looking at more affordable first-generation cars or more aggressive second-generation models.
It’s best thought of as a driver’s car, but you still get some fairly usable rear seats and a similar-sized boot to a family hatchback, so you can live with a used BMW 2 Series as a daily driver.
Few cars come close to offering the practicality of the BMW 2 Series – there are other, smaller sports cars you could consider, such as the Audi TT, Ford Mustang and Audi A3 Cabriolet.
The BMW 2 Series stands out among BMW coupes for its compact size, agility and performance.
Compared to larger models like the 4 Series, the 2 Series offers a more nimble and entry-level option, blending driving dynamics and luxury in the compact coupe segment.
The BMW 2 Series offers high-performance versions like the M240i and M2.
The M240i features a potent engine, sport-tuned suspension and M Sport enhancements.
The M2, a dedicated M model, further elevates performance with a more powerful engine, track-focused features and aggressive styling.
BMW ConnectedDrive services in the 2 Series offer seamless connectivity with features like sat-nav, real-time traffic updates, remote vehicle control and concierge services.
The system enhances the driving experience by providing advanced technology and connectivity, ensuring a smart and connected journey in the compact coupé.
The BMW Active Driving Assistant in the 2 Series enhances safety with features like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and blind-spot monitoring.
These technologies provide additional assistance to the driver, helping to prevent collisions and maintain a safer driving experience in the compact coupé.
The BMW 2 Series demonstrates competitive fuel efficiency that varies across engine configurations.
Generally, it provides a balanced blend of performance and fuel economy, with specific figures dependent on the chosen engine and driving conditions in this compact luxury coupe.
