Start nowBMW has a long history of building seriously quick performance models, and the M5 is an excellent example – it's a V8-powered saloon based on the popular 5 Series.
A 5 Series M Sport has a sporty bodykit that’s inspired by the M5, but because it’s a regular 5 Series, you’ll get the usual pick of efficient petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid options.
M Sport has been a staple in the 5 Series range since the mid-noughties, so you’ll be able to choose from current-generation or more affordable previous-generation models.
The 5 Series M Sport is a popular model for company car drivers, taxi drivers and large families, so it’s the 2.0-litre engines that are the most popular.
They include the same 184hp 520i petrol and 190hp 520d diesel engines as you’d find elsewhere in the BMW range.
More powerful 333hp 540i models are also available, and there are also some older 3.0-litre engines including the punchy 530d.
Plug-in hybrid power options come in the form of the 2.0-litre 530e and the 3.0-litre 545e – both should be able to do around 30 miles between charges.
Newer 550e models can do around 50 miles on electric power alone.
Newer M Sport models come with an automatic boot lid, all-round parking sensors, cruise control and a two-zone climate control system.
Being a BMW, each trim level – including the 5 Series M Sport – is available with a range of optional extras, including massaging seats, heated front and rear seats, cooled front seats and a heated steering wheel.
New 2023-onward models come with two large displays that blend together and look like one long screen – one for the infotainment system and one for the digital instrument cluster.
BMW previously offered SE and Sport versions that sat below the 5 Series M Sport, but M Sport became the only trim level for the latest 5 Series in 2023.
There are also electric i5 variants, but these are also only available in M Sport trim.
Above these are performance models, which don’t belong to a trim level as such. They include models like the i5 M60, 5 Series M550i, and M5.
The BMW 5 Series M Sport offers various engine options, including powerful configurations like inline-six and V8 engines. Common options include the 540i with a turbocharged inline-six and the M550i with a potent V8.
Fuel economy varies by engine. The 530d diesel model achieves around 50 mpg combined, while the petrol M550i may have a lower figure of around 30 mpg. Actual values depend on the specific engine and driving conditions.
The BMW 5 Series M Sport features distinct exterior styling elements, including a more aggressive front bumper, side skirts, M Sport badging and aerodynamic enhancements. These additions contribute to a sportier and more dynamic appearance compared to the regular 5 Series.
The BMW 1 Series M Sport accelerates from 0-62mph in around 6.8 seconds, depending on the specific model and engine configuration.
These are all high-performance, luxury saloons with similar features. The BMW emphasises a sporty driving experience, the Audi A6 S-Line offers a blend of comfort and tech and the Mercedes E-Class AMG-Line provides a plush ride with a focus on luxury and performance.
