What is the BMW i3s?

The BMW i3s has 184hp, compared with the standard i3’s 170h, but it cuts the 0-62mph sprint considerably to 6.9 seconds without having too much of an impact on range (providing you don’t floor it from every set of lights).

Both the BMW i3 and the i3s have a 120Ah battery, which equates to 42.2kWh. That translates to a range of between 150 and 200 miles, depending on how you drive.

A used BMW i3s has an eye-catching design because it’s a fairly tall and narrow car that has a set of rear doors that open backwards.

What are the BMW i3s specs?

The BMW i3s has a 184hp electric motor powering the rear wheels, which ensures that it feels nimble and agile around town and when you need to push it a bit harder.

The 270Nm of torque might not sound much by diesel standards, but it’s available instantly, so you’ll feel the effects knocking you back into your seat.

An i3s has a claimed range of 177 miles, compared with 192 miles on the regular i3. The reality is that both will give you similar results in the real world.

Used BMW i3s features and equipment

There aren’t any trim levels across the i3 range, so all models get good levels of standard equipment. The only upgrades you get with an i3s are performance and cosmetic-related.

You can expect things like LED headlights, heated seats, rear parking sensors and a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay support.

As well as optional extras like front parking sensors, a reversing camera and keyless entry, new car buyers could also specify an ‘Interior World’ – a choice of colours and materials for the interior trim – so watch out for these.

Where the i3s sits in the BMW range

The BMW i3 range is very simple, because it primarily consists of a single model that received plenty of upgrades over the decade it was on sale between 2013 and 2023, most notably to the battery capacity (and range).

There are, however, some spinoffs worth considering. More recently, the i3s offered a performance twist. There was also a Range Extender model with a petrol engine that charges the battery on the go (rather than driving the wheels), but the newer (bigger) batteries did away with the need for this.
