Start nowThe BMW i4 is based on the 4 Series Gran Coupé, so it’s a five-door saloon-shaped model. There are no two-door or convertible models, as with the rest of the 4 Series range.
Popular BMW i4 Gran Coupé trims
You can take your pick of two BMW i4 Gran Coupé trim levels, plus a performance model with extra power and style.
> BMW i4 Gran Coupé Sport - cheapest version with LED headlights, a powered boot lid, all-round parking sensors and a reversing camera
> BMW i4 Gran Coupé M Sport - mostly sporty upgrades, such as a more aggressive body kit and sports seats
> BMW i4 Gran Coupé M50 - 544hp performance edition with uprated brakes, adaptive suspension and variable sport steering
BMW i4 Gran Coupé history
BMW launched the i4 Gran Coupé at the end of 2021, around a year after the updated 4 Series came out, on which it’s based.
> BMW i4 Gran Coupé G26 (2021) - electric version of the G26 4 Series Coupé designed to rival the Tesla Model 3
> BMW i4 Gran Coupé eDrive35 (2023) - less powerful (and cheaper) variant with impressive range of nearly 300 miles
> Facelifted BMW i4 Gran Coupé G26 (2024) - styling revisions, minor efficiency enhancements and upgraded infotainment system
All used BMW i4 Gran Coupés have LED headlights, interior ambient lighting, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera and a digital instrument cluster.
You also get a large and responsive iDrive infotainment system with BMW’s latest software. The standard 100W sound system is great, but you can get a 16-speaker 464W system.
A used BMW i4 Gran Coupé is considered reliable because it benefits from BMW’s extensive history of building electric and hybrid models.
It features high-quality materials and solid engineering, as you’d expect from BMW, and can even outperform a petrol-powered 4 Series on dependability because the electric variant uses fewer moving parts.
Compared with the rest of the 4 Series range, a BMW i4 can be especially cheap to run. With a range of 250-350 miles, a full charge might cost between £5-10 with off-peak rates.
Keep in mind that insurance and servicing may cost more than non-premium brands, but that’s the same for any BMW model.
Whether you’re looking for a family car or you spend a lot of time on the motorway, a used BMW i4 Gran Coupé for sale offers plenty of comfort, performance and practicality.
It has a more practical boot opening than a Tesla Model 3, which is a traditional saloon, and offers a sleeker design than the boxier Polestar 2.
BMW hasn’t hinted at a two-door Coupé variant of the i4, but the body lines are already more swooping than most saloons.
According to BMW, the eDrive35 model can go up to 308 miles between charges thanks to a sizeable 70.2kWh battery.
The eDrive40 model has a bigger 83.9kWh battery and can travel up to 370 miles. Despite having the same big battery, the M50’s higher performance means its range drops to 318 miles.
Expect a little bit less than the quoted figures with real-world driving.
Charging at an off-peak rate of 7p/kWh would cost around £6, but it could get up to £50 with an expensive rapid charger.
It’ll still be cheaper to charge an i4 than to fill up a similar 4 Series with petrol or diesel.
The i4 is 60mm longer, 25mm wider and 8mm taller than the 3 Series saloon, but the reality is that they feel the same to drive.
Due to the sloping roofline, headroom in the back of the i4 can be slightly more limited. It also has 10 litres less boot space than the 3 Series, but a much wider boot opening.
The BMW i4 is similar to compact executive saloons like the Mercedes C-Class and Volvo S60. It’s not as luxurious as the bigger Porsche Taycan, but it’s a step or two above your typical family hatchback.
