Start nowThere are two versions of the BMW i5 for sale – a saloon variant and an estate model (badged “Touring”).
Popular BMW i5 trims
BMW sells a handful of sporty-looking i5 models, as well as a performance variant, but there’s plenty of optional kit available across the board, too.
> BMW i5 Sport Edition - entry-level version with LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, parking sensors and reversing camera
> BMW i5 M Sport - sporty-looking edition with aggressive styling upgrades, stylish alloys and Alcantara interior trim
> BMW i5 M60 - performance model with 593hp and sporting upgrades such as firmer suspension and beefier brakes
BMW i5 history
Although the 5 Series has a history of more than half a century, the i5 came out with the latest eight-generation G60 model in 2024.
> BMW i5 G60 (2024) - BMW’s first electric saloon and estate model, which now sits above the i4 Gran Coupé and beneath the flagship i7
Every used BMW i5 for sale has dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, faux-leather upholstery, adaptive LED headlights, parking sensors, a reversing camera and a wireless phone charger.
There’s also a 14.9-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, and an additional 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
BMW sells plenty of optional extras worth scouting out, such as keyless entry with a powered boot lid, a heated steering wheel, cooled front seats, heated rear seats and even a self-parking system.
Because it’s a new car, there isn’t much data to back up the i5’s reliability. However, the rest of BMW’s electric ‘i’ range of cars has proven to be very dependable, and BMW’s track record for building high-quality cars sets the i5 in good stead.
Being a premium model, it’s reasonable to expect slightly higher-than-average running costs for things like insurance.
However, being an electric model, and a pretty efficient one at that, you could see fuel costs drop considerably compared with a petrol or diesel 5 Series.
The BMW 5 Series has long been a staple for company car drivers and business execs spending a lot of time on the road, and the BMW i5 for sale takes that one step further by offering a seriously compelling environmental benefit, too.
Other electric estates include the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo and Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer. You can also get a used BMW 5 Series Touring, Mercedes E-Class Estate, Audi A6 Avant or Volvo V90 with plug-in hybrid power.
The BMW i5 costs around £68,000 from new –£17,000 more than the cheapest 520i. The Touring model costs another £2,000 more than the saloon.
It may seem expensive, but it’s in line with many rivals. Additionally, used BMW i5 pricing that’s already dropped to around £50,000 and attractive finance deals help to soften the blow.
The i5’s 81.2kWh battery claims a range of up to 362 miles, or 320 miles for the performance M60 model. Touring models lose around 6-14 miles of range depending on spec.
The BMW M5 is a very serious performance car. While there’s no full-blooded M version of the i5, the BMW i5 M60 does a good job of keeping up with the M5.
The i5 M60’s 601hp is good for 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds, which is only slightly behind the 625hp BMW M5’s 3.3-second time.
In BMW’s dictionary, ‘i’ refers to its fully electric range. The ‘5’ means that this is an electric variant of the 5 Series.
Besides being an electric version of BMW’s own 5 Series, the i5 also has competition from other cars. Popular alternatives are the Mercedes EQE, Tesla Model S, Audi e-tron and Porsche Taycan.
