Start nowVery few buyers ever opt for the extremely quick X5 M, which uses a large V8 petrol engine, but the BMW X5 M Sport is considerably more popular.
M Sport arrived on the third-generation BMW X5 F15 as part of a mid-life update, and it offers all the style of the X5 M without the expensive running costs.
Because it’s based on the regular X5, the BMW X5 M Sport can be had with a range of petrol, diesel and even plug-in hybrid power options.
The most popular BMW X5 M Sport models generally come with 3.0-litre diesel engines. The 298hp xDrive30d model sells well, but there’s also a more powerful 352hp xDrive40d model.
There are also 335hp xDrive40i petrol versions, and even 2.0-litre diesels in the form of the 231hp 25d model, available with four-wheel drive (xDrive) or rear-wheel drive (sDrive).
In terms of hybrid options, previous 2.0-litre xDrive40e models have been replaced by 3.0-litre xDrive50e models, which have a larger 25.7kWh battery capable of around 60 miles between charges.
Newer BMW X5 M Sport models come with all-around parking sensors, a powered boot lid, three-zone climate control, an upgraded sound system, and cruise control.
They also come with a large touchscreen infotainment system and a digital instrument cluster, which – in the case of facelifted models – looks like one long piece of screen.
Although it’s the range-topper, there are still optional extras to choose from, including massaging seats, front and rear heated seats, cooled front seats and luxurious soft-close doors.
M Sport is generally considered to be a high trim level in the rest of the BMW range, but in the case of the X5, it’s generally the most popular.
Newer models are available with a slightly cheaper xLine trim level, while older models were also available with SE trims.
Above M Sport are a few performance models, like the diesel M50d, the petrol M60i, and the seriously quick X5 M.
The X5 M Sport offers sport-tuned suspension with a firmer setup compared to the regular X5. This means you get sharper and more direct handling and agility, providing a more dynamic driving experience.
The X5 M Sport has a range of engine options, including an inline-six and V8. Engines may vary by model year but all are punchy and very powerful.
The BMW X5 M Sport's torque and power figures vary based on which engine you have. Horsepower ranges from 335hp to 523hp and torque figures range from 330 to 553 lb-ft of torque.
Yes, there is a seven-seat option for the X5 M Sport.
Yes, the X5 M Sport is tuned for better handling than the standard X5. This is thanks to its M Sport suspension, upgraded brakes and more powerful engines.
