Start nowWhen it comes to SUVs, it’s easy to find an ultra-luxurious model with all the bells and whistles, but sometimes you just need a really capable 4x4 for towing or tackling rough terrain.
Step in the Dacia Duster – the cheapest four-wheel-drive model on the market. It comes with petrol and diesel power and, from the third generation, a hybrid option.
If you just like the idea of a rugged-looking and spacious crossover, there are more economical front-wheel-drive models available that are still capable of an adventurous weekend away.
Popular Dacia Duster trims
Dacia’s trim levels are simple, and most come with all the essentials. Avoid early entry-level Access cars if you can, which make do without remote locking, air-con and a radio system (unless the previous owner installed one). As a rule, the newer the better.
> Dacia Duster Expression - newer entry-level car with reversing camera on an eight-inch touchscreen
> Dacia Duster Journey - considerable upgrade with multi-view parking camera, keyless entry and automatic climate control
> Dacia Duster Extreme - this range-topper gets a few styling enhancements, including darker details and black alloy wheels
Dacia Duster history
Following the success of the Sandero, Dacia launched its own take on the 4x4, suitable for families on a budget.
> First-generation Dacia Duster (2010) - pretty basic model but with a strong powertrain selection borrowed from Renault
> Facelifted Dacia Duster (2013) - smarter-looking exterior with chrome details and more efficient engines
> Second-generation Dacia Duster (2017) - more modern-looking styling upgrade with better standard equipment
> Facelifted Dacia Duster (2021) - front-end styling changes and simplification of engine options
> Facelifted Dacia Duster (2022) - another style tweak with Dacia’s new logo
> Third-generation Dacia Duster (2024) - completely new, sharp design and hybrid options
In its early days, entry-level Duster models came with little more than an engine and some wheels – they were designed to offer faff-free, capable and reliable motoring.
Thankfully, higher trim levels come with all the creature comforts. From the second generation (which you’ll find on cinch), considerable improvements were made to the kit list – low-cost Expression cars now have a large eight-inch infotainment display with all the smartphone connectivity you’ll need.
They also get rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, cruise control, air-con and alloy wheels. Mid-spec Journey cars are worth the upgrade for the 360-degree parking camera, keyless entry and heated front seats.
Compared to many cars on the road, a Dacia Duster for sale is a comparably simple machine, mechanically, which helps make it easy to look after one.
It also helps that many of its parts, including engines and gearboxes as well as some interior switches and parts, are all borrowed from tried-and-tested Renaults.
The most popular engine options are the 1.2- and 1.3-litre petrol models, which should be able to push 40mpg in daily driving. The diesel is even more frugal.
Four-wheel-drive versions compromise slightly, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised how cheap they can be to run compared with bigger, heavier SUVs.
Look out for models badged Bi-Fuel, they start on petrol but can switch over to LPG on a run, which can be cheaper still.
A used Dacia Duster for sale is a compelling option for somebody who needs functionality and practicality out of their car, whether that’s towing, using a roof box, packing it full of kit or just getting it a bit muddy.
There aren’t many cars that come close to offering the Duster’s value for money, but you could look at models like the SsangYong Tivoli (later KGM Tivoli), the Suzuki S-Cross or the MG ZS.
The cost of a used Dacia Duster on finance will depend on the model you choose and the type of finance you go for.

The Dacia Duster is considered a reliable car and is usually cheap to repair if issues do arise.
The Dacia Duster is made in low-cost countries using electrics, engines and body platforms that are used in many other cars, which helps keep costs down because unique parts aren’t required.
The Dacia Duster is produced, marketed and sold in partnership between Renault and its subsidiary Dacia, and Renault oversees a lot of the production line and budget.
When compared to other SUVs, the Dacia Duster is very cheap to insure. Most versions sit between groups 13 to 15, but it depends on the engine, trim level and whether you buy a two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive model.
