Start nowMercedes uses ‘GL’ to identify its SUVs, and this GLC is based on the C-Class. That means it’s a mid-sized model with enough space for the family but it shouldn’t be as costly to run as some of Mercedes’ bigger models.
A couple of generations have been available, as well as a sporty-looking GLC Coupé variant.
Popular Mercedes GLC trims
Mercedes has sold the GLC with a range of trims, including endless AMG Line variants, over the years. Below is just a guide – it’s best to check any individual listing so you know what you’re getting.
> Mercedes GLC AMG Line - entry-level model for newer cars with reversing camera, heated front seats and three-zone climate control
> Mercedes GLC AMG Line Premium - upgraded version with digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
> Mercedes GLC AMG Line Premium Plus - top-spec edition with keyless go and 360-degree parking camera
Mercedes GLC history
Mercedes was quite late into the mid-size family SUV market, but in 2015, it hit the nail on the head. Since then, things have only gotten better.
> First-generation Mercedes GLC (2015) - Mercedes introduces its reasonably-sized, reasonably-priced SUV for the masses
> Facelifted Mercedes GLC (2019) - this is an important year for tech, with the addition of the much-improved MBUX infotainment system
> Second-generation Mercedes GLC (2018) - similar but refreshed exterior styling, brand-new interior with high-tech, minimalist feeling
It’s important to check any individual listing because the GLC has been on sale for many years and has received several updates.
As a guide, even the cheapest, oldest used Mercedes GLC for sale will get a powered boot lid, a reversing camera, keyless go, cruise control, electrically adjustable front seats and a seven-inch infotainment display with a touchpad controller.
These days, you can pick up a second-generation model with a standard-fit, slick 11.9-inch infotainment display and a secondary 12.3-inch display behind the steering wheel. They have plenty of other tech, too, like a fingerprint scanner and voice control via the ‘Hey Mercedes’ command.
Mercedes has been selling the GLC for a number of years, so it has had time to perfect the formula. It also helps that it shares some mechanical parts with the C-Class, so it already jumped into the market with its wheels turning.
Compared to some more affordable SUVs, the GLC can be slightly more complex. Many models include automatic gearboxes, four-wheel drive and mild hybrid technology, which can all be costly to repair if they go wrong.
Thankfully, there’s little evidence that things regularly go wrong, and this isn’t a concern that only relates to Mercedes cars, but it’s something you should be aware of when buying a large, premium SUV.
Many buyers opt for one of the punchy 2.0-litre diesel engines, and while these are generally the best for efficiency, the added weight of the four-wheel-drive system can be detrimental. Petrol models are more refined but less economical.
If you have access to a home charging point, one of the plug-in hybrids could make sense. Some PHEV models have electric ranges of up to around 80 miles, but not all, so be sure to check.
A used Mercedes GLC for sale is a high-end option for families after a comfortable, spacious and premium SUV.
It’s happy around town, but it’s happier still stretching its legs on longer trips where the benefits of going for a luxurious model become more apparent.
Similarly priced SUVs include the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60, which all offer similar levels of refinement and equipment.
The Mercedes-Benz GLC coupé distinguishes itself with a sleek, sloping roofline and coupé-inspired styling.
This design combines sportiness with the versatility of an SUV, offering a unique and dynamic presence on the road.
Mercedes' MBUX infotainment system gets a responsive touchscreen, voice control, sat-nav with augmented reality, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and customisation options.
The GLC coupé's sloping roofline in comparison to the standard GLC may slightly reduce rear-seat headroom, but it doesn't significantly affect overall seating comfort.
However, the coupé design does give you a slightly smaller boot space due to the sloping roof.
The 4MATIC all-wheel drive system in the GLC is ideal for challenging driving conditions, such as snow, rain or uneven terrain.
It provides enhanced traction and stability by distributing power to all four wheels, ensuring optimal performance and safety in various road conditions.
The Mercedes-Benz GLC is a compact luxury SUV, while the GLE is a midsize SUV. The GLE offers more room, power and features, making it larger and more premium than the GLC.
