Start nowThe Kadjar was Renault’s big-selling family SUV, built sharing mechanical parts with the Nissan Qashqai. It’s smaller than the short-lived second-generation Koleos, which was on sale for four years, and substantially bigger than the Captur.
It’s strictly a five-seater family SUV, but there were plenty of variants available including a wide range of trims, optional extras and engine choices.
Popular Renault Kadjar trims
Renault shuffled around its trim levels across the entire range a few times over the years. Below is a brief overview, but it’s important to check any individual listing to make sure you know what you’re getting.
> Renault Kadjar Play - this is the cheapest option, with dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors and a seven-inch infotainment display
> Renault Kadjar Iconic - a sweet-spot model, with front parking sensors, reversing camera, keyless entry and upgraded sat-nav
> Renault Kadjar GT Line - top-spec car with self-parking, heated front seats, BOSE sound system and LED headlights
Renault Kadjar history
Renault launched the Kadjar in 2015, tapping into the booming SUV market, and benefitting from the Nissan Qashqai’s success. Although it ceased production in 2022, it was replaced by the Austral, which serves the same purpose in the market.
> Renault Kadjar (2015) - Renault’s first family-sized SUV, which proves a hit among UK drivers after a mid-sized model
> Renault Kadjar update (2017) - new 165hp 1.6-litre petrol and 130hp 1.6-litre diesel with CVT automatic gearbox
> Facelifted Renault Kadjar (2019) - subtle styling enhancements and new trim levels with better equipment as standard
> Renault Kadjar update (2022) - revised trim levels again to bring the Kadjar in line with other Renault models
The Kadjar was on sale for around seven years, and trim levels changed over the years. The oldest, most basic cars have a digital instrument cluster, air-con and Bluetooth, with mid-spec models adding keyless entry, dual-zone climate control and an upgraded infotainment system.
After the facelift, range-toppers had top tech like self-parking, heated seats, a BOSE sound system and plenty of leather and faux-leather trim.
By the time it went off sale, entry-level Equilibre models had all-around parking sensors, a reversing camera, keyless entry and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, so there’s little need to spend more on the top-spec Techno version.
Renault is known for building reliable cars, and the Kadjar is no different to other popular models like the Clio and Captur. It borrows a lot of existing Renault mechanicals, like engines and gearboxes, which helps improve dependability.
It’s also built on a similar platform to the Nissan Qashqai, which at the time, was in its second generation. With everything being tried and tested, the Kadjar is a solid pick.
Most Renault Kadjar buyers opted for front-wheel drive, which seriously helps keep running costs low. With economical petrol and diesel engines, it should cost no more than your average family hatchback to run.
Avoid the powerful 1.6-litre petrol and four-wheel-drive Kadjars if you can, because they perform slightly worse on the mpg front.
Still, if you need the power for towing or just enjoy a bit of poke, they’re not what you’d call inefficient.
A used Renault Kadjar for sale is a no-brainer for families who value practicality, affordability and versatility. It’s a consistently good SUV and ticks most of the boxes a family would want.
Other similar options include the Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage and Ford Kuga.
Because the Renault Kadjar shares so many of its components with the Nissan Qashqai, we’d expect it to offer good levels of reliability.
In terms of safety, it earned a full five-star rating following its Euro NCAP crash-testing.
The cost of a used Renault Kadjar on finance will depend on the model you choose and the type of finance you go for. You can get a quote using our online finance calculator, to see what suits your budget.
We think a used Renault Kadjar is a great car, and would make a very good family car for those wanting a mid-sized SUV that offers plenty of interior space, bootspace and all-round practicality.
The Renault Kadjar has a maximum towing capacity of 1,800kg in its largest diesel engine form, so that's the one to go for if you want to tow a caravan or trailer.
The Renault Kadjar has featured Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity since 2017.
