The VW up! isn't a particularly old model, but it’s seen a few different facelifts over the years to keep it fresh.

A Volkswagen up! for sale is a sparse car compared with the Polo and Golf, but it still comes with all the features you'd need in a first car or city runaround. 

Even the base model comes with USB charge ports, a radio, six speakers and Bluetooth. 

While no used Volkswagen up! models have a proper infotainment system (a cost-saving exercise), there is a Volkswagen Connect app and mount to use your own phone as a mini display for your music and maps. 

Move up to one of the higher-spec models and you get heated seats, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, sports suspension as well as heated and electronically adjustable door mirrors. 

Is the Volkswagen up! reliable?

Yes, a used VW up! is a reliable city car that shares a lot of its components with the Mii and Citigo, both of which are dependable models. 

Since production ended in 2023, fewer are available with manufacturer warranties on the used car market even though all Volkswagen cars come with the same three-year/60,000-mile warranty. 

In terms of safety, the up! scored three out of five stars following its most recent Euro NCAP crash test in 2019, offering high protection for occupants with 81% for adults and 83% for children. 

How much does the Volkswagen up! cost to run?

All used Volkswagen up! models are powered by the same 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine but with varying power outputs. 

The regular cars produce up to 60hp, whereas the up! GTI produces 115hp. While doing so, they're all very efficient, with the standard car offering up to 55.4mpg and the GTI offering 53.3mpg. 

There is also an electric version called the e-up! that offers up to 159 miles of range from a single charge – ideal car if you live in a busy city such as London. 

Who is the Volkswagen up! suitable for?

We'd recommend a used VW up! to anyone, really.  

Whether you're a first-time driver, nervous on the road or just need something small to get around town in, the up! is ideal. 

It's compact but large enough to seat four people and a bit of luggage. Plus, used values make it even more tempting.
