Use our Help Me Choose tool to go from 1000s of cars to just a handful of recommendations — and cinch your search.
Start nowThe BMW X5 has been a household name in the world of luxury SUVs for as long as the segment has been around. It has led the charge in many ways, and newer models are no different.
Over the years, the X5 has won many awards for its safety, design and quality, which is a testament to that BMW attention to detail.
In addition to this, all X5 models have four-wheel drive, and the xDrive system is one of the best on the market, giving you peace of mind when driving in less-than-ideal conditions on- or off-road.
– Read our BMW X5 review
The X5’s main rivals are the Volvo XC90, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover Sport.
You can choose from a range of used BMW X5 models, including flashy trims like the M Sport and xLine, and a choice of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines.
Popular BMW X5 trims
The X5 has the same trim level names as many other BMW models, but the overwhelming majority of buyers bought M Sport models, so you’ll find plenty of these high-spec cars to buy used.
> BMW X5 SE - Entry-level model with lots of car tech, like an electric boot lid, heated seats and a reversing camera
> BMW X5 xLine - Mid-spec trim on newer models, with wireless phone charger and heads-up display
> BMW X5 M Sport - Popular range-topper with kit including keyless entry, 360-degree camera and sporty styling
BMW X5 history
BMW launched the X5 a few years after it acquired Land Rover, so the original 1999 X5 shared many parts with the Range Rover. There have been several iterations of BMW’s SUV since then, which no longer use the same parts as the Range Rover.
> BMW X5 F15 third generation - A notable step up in quality over previous models and excellent off-road ability
> BMW X5 G05 fourth generation - Modern and stylish design with high levels of standard equipment
Inside, a BMW X5 for sale takes a simplistic approach but offers everything you need for comfortable everyday driving.
The entry-level trim is the BMW X5 xLine, and this offers climate control and the iDrive infotainment system, plus chunky 19-inch alloy wheels.
BMW's M Sport is an edgier take on the classic, with an aggressive body kit plus all the features from the standard models. You’ll also get larger 20-inch alloys plus sporty interior touches.
The BMX X5 M50i is the range-topper and brings 22-inch alloys, Adaptive M suspension and an M Sport exhaust system.
Its iDrive system works very well and looks very crisp through the centre display, but if you fancy using another system, simply connect your smartphone to the car and the software will switch to either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
The cool features don’t end there either, because the boot has a funky trick too. The X5 features a split tailgate, which means it opens in two parts. This is especially useful when you want to load and unload the vehicle when a trailer is attached.
Being one of the brand’s flagship SUV models, BMW ensures that the X5 is as reliable as it can be. It offers amazing build quality throughout and is available with an impressive range of gearboxes and engines.
While there are 2.0-litre diesels and plug-in hybrids to pick from, most buyers tend to go for the 3.0-litre diesel, which will do around 35-40mpg under most conditions.
Remember that this is a large, expensive and powerful vehicle, so parts like tyres will be pricier than for a smaller hatchback, and insurance may also come at a higher cost.
The used BMW X5 makes a great family SUV. This premium luxury SUV rivals the likes of the Range Rover Sport, Porsche Cayenne and Volvo XC90, and does a good job at it.
It's certainly a worthy contender when choosing your next family vehicle.
As standard, the X5 is not available with seven seats but upgraded models may come with a third row of seats – however, this is not an option on hybrid models.
The X5 offers a dynamic driving experience with powerful engine options, precise handling and advanced suspension systems.
The BMW X5 is equipped with advanced safety technologies, including collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and optional extras like adaptive cruise control and parking assistance.
BMW balances power and fuel efficiency in the X5 through innovative technologies like efficient powertrains, aerodynamics and lightweight materials, optimising performance without compromising fuel economy.
The latest iDrive system features a user-friendly interface with touchscreen, voice and gesture control.
It integrates navigation, multimedia and connectivity options for a seamless driving experience.
The Panorama Glass Roof Sky Lounge in the BMW X5 enhances the luxury experience by creating an open, airy feel and incorporating LED lighting patterns, providing an ambient, starlit effect for passengers to enjoy.
